5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 10, 2012

We stayed in 3 similarly priced hotels in Urumqi, and this was by quite some margin the best choice.

The location is good, right on a busy junction with cabs aplenty. 10 mins walk to Southern Airlines Pearl Hotel and Parkson Mall.

Service is very good. The front desk were very accommodating in onward travel enquiries. The security staff patrol the entrance and lobby. The concierce was naturally helpful.

Facilities are good. The lobby is great, and the breakfast options are plentiful with a nice atmosphere.

Overall, recommended.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 24, 2012

Stayed here after reading pretty good reviews and getting a good 'no refund, pay in advance' deal with breakfast. Staff are very helpful and courteous. Check-in was smooth. Allocated a room in a separate building (not in the main tower), it was fine generally. It was a non-smoking room but there was definitely a smell of cigarettes in the room, not surprising I guess and not too strong, it was OK. Room had reasonably large twin beds, quite hard (but good for me) and with nice clean and comfortable sheets. Room has a desk with internet cable (no wifi), flatscreen TV (a couple of English speaking channels - HBO and CNN), minibar/fridge, two complimentary bottles of water, safe, aircon, heating (hard to control and too hot even though outside it was -10C so I turned it off and slept comfortably), wardrobe, bathrobes/slippers. Bathroom had free toiletries (condoms for sale!) and shower (quite weak) over a bathtub. Breakfast was extensive but was advertised as 'American' but to me it was more local and looked more like dinner to me (I still have very European tastes!), however, there was fruit, cereals and bread/pastries which did me fine. I never really worked out the location of the hotel, I was only in Urumqi overnight, I don't think it was particularly central but I'm not too sure about that,

Despite having prepaid for a room with king sized bed, we were told on arrival that we can only have a room with twin sized beds. Took us a long time & a lot of insistence to get what we pay for.. No explanation or apologies were offered.

Check -in was smooth, and the lobby is large, with an enormous koi pond surrounding the entire lobby lounge area. The room is ok, but the toilet is small for china standards, but at least it's a standing shower and not a bathtub. There is CNN and HBO, among the other chinese channels. The chinese restaurant serves average food for dinner, and the breakfast buffet though looking like it's got everything, lacks quality. When one logs onto the internet, there appears to be a fee, but when you call to get your username and password, they say the fee is waived, so I don't know if this is standard or depending on the room rate you pay

5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 30, 2010

I was in Urumqi just after the riots last year and stayed at the Sheraton.Admitadly it was a difficult time with a lot of security in place and tenseness between the Uighers and Han Chinese following the tragic circumstances. Then all hotels were very quiet and the Sheraton was like an empty mall.I recall a bland, tired Club level room, poor F+B services and a sense of "I wish there was something better - but where?".The only advantage of the Sheraton is its location in the main shopping district.Well for my visit last week I was talked into trying the Han Chinese operated Yin Du by a local friend and after careful advance research (including Tripadvisor) decided to back the view taking my party of fifteen for three nights. From the moment we checked in I knew it was the right decision. The foyer area was full of activity and was bright and inviting. The rooms are twice as good as what the Sheraton charges more for! Great city views, smartly decorated rooms, very acceptable bathrooms.Internal hotel services (ie laundry) were very reliable. Not a lot of English is spoken in China's wild west but the staff worked most things through. On the second floor the Chinese restaurant (the cheapest of the hotels three - two others are exhorbitantly overpriced selling imported seafood in the middle of the desert!) and the Muslim restaurant were both excellant and great value. The negatives are the indoor pool in the basement of an adjacent building which was small and looked dangerously unhealthy;the Club lounge operates at odd early closing hours and has a very limited offering - basically its throwing money away - better to use the lobby bar or go elsewhere. Apparantly a Hilton will open in Urumqi in 2010 in a new developement but until it does Yin Du is without doubt the best five star offering in town.I was apprehensive and came away well satisfied and in fact delighted.I would return happily. The Sheraton is a typical US chain relic - avoid.
