“Excellent room, excellent hotel lobby and surrounding areas”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 10, 2011

This was one of 5 hotels I stayed at for my trip and was the best! To begin with, the lobby, surrounding eating areas, are just fantastic! There is an excellent hot pot place and live music in the hotel and outside restaurant. The breakfast was very good as well.

Sometimes, the lobby is great, but the room not. In this case, the room also was very good. I really liked the modern design and the glass wall between the tub and the bedroom.

The hotel is new and is located in Chengdu's new district which is an up and coming area and just half an hour from the Panda Research Centre (a must see attraction as panda bears native province is Sichuan). The room was beautiful - very big with a very comfortable bed, flat screen TV, complimentary in-room internet access (both WiFi and hard wired) bottled water and some fruit. Breakfast buffet was fantastic with alot of selection (Western and Asian) with amazing pastries! There's also a Cuban cigar divan if that's your thing!

What stops this review from being 5 stars were: 1) air conditioning in the room is centrally controlled and can't be changed; 2) no indoor swimming pool (despite having a basic fitness centre and spa).

Still, for a business hotel with a lot of comfortable luxuries, you would be hard pressed to find something better than this.

I love this hotel every time I come here. I should say that I am an IC Royal Ambassador, but nonetheless the service and facilities are outstanding. Service is impeccable from the spa, concierce, front door people, front desk people, lounges, and housekeeping. Fast, and very personable. I always have some manager introducing him/herself to me and asking if I need anything, and if anything comes up to call them.

One time I did, and service went over the top.

As a RA member I always get huge suites, wonderful welcome gifts (return trips I get spa certificates), and lounge access (lounge is huge, beautiful, and service impeccable).

Rooms are great too, lovely decor and always clean and efficient.

The only downsides of this hotel are location - not very close to center of city but only a short 7 min walk to the subway which is convenient, and cost (prices seem to be inching higher each year). Still, for what you get for this hotel in room, amenities, and service the extra cost and hassle of distance for me is well worth it. I couldn't recommend it more.

Room Tip: Use the comments field or feel to reach out the hotel in advance. Their staff is very attentive and...

the place is impeccable, both attached restaurants (and there are plenty!) as well as lobby, breakfast buffet and finally the rooms!
as usual, the checkout procedure takes longer than anywhere else in the world. Watch out to get the correct title for your receipt (fa piao) if you should need one.
Try the offered evening show (changing masks dance) - always amazing to see that performance!

Room Tip: ask for a room on a higher than 10th floor. During events and weekends you might experience some noi...

In design, this hotel is top quality, from the very zen lobby, spacious rooms, to the beautiful furnishing and well stock minibar and toiletries, I was truly impressed when I checked in and entered my room. However that was the peak and it got downhill from there, right to the lowest level, let me take point by point.

1. Room service - I ordered a club sandwich and the order taker recommended me to pay cash. This really astounds me as part of the reason for room service is to be able to room charge. I do suspect it is rather due to something more sinister to avoid any record keeping.

2. Breakfast - the breakfast spread was big, lots of choices really, from 7 types of fresh juices, to lots of cold and hot choices, heaps of western dishes too. However the quality of the cooking stations is poor. My cooked to order egg benedict was cold when I received it, egg omelette was too oily and the broth in the noodle soup was tasteless.

3. Taxi - when we hoped into a taxi off the rank at the hotel lobby to go to the airport, the driver insisted on a fixed fare rather than by the meter, the fare the driver wanted is double the expected meter fare. It is not like the trip to the airport is a short one either. The driver even said the hotel allows this and insisted we ask the hotel. We did and the bellboy said we should use the meter, but did not press the driver on it and only asked us to change taxi. The first driver then proceeded to tell the next taxi in line about our destination and told him not to take us unless for a fixed fare, right in front of hotel staff. What's more, both taxis returned to the taxi queue in their original positions ready for the next passenger. Why were those taxis not forced to leave the hotel property immediately and banned from picking up passengers from this hotel and other hotels in the Intercontinental hotel group? (There are 2 Holiday Inns next door)

We did eventually get another taxi, who was dropping off other passengers. I am shocked that a 5* star hotel can allow this to happen and let hotel guests to be scammed liked this. Are the hotel staff also in on it and receiving kickbacks when inexperienced travellers fall for the trap? Fixed fare may be allowed in other countries, but it is illegal to charge anything but the metered fare in China.

It is also standard practice now at 5* hotels in China that all taxis that come and go have their number plates registered by the hotel staff and plus written on a card for the passenger, for the safety of the passenger and incase any items are left behind. They do not do this at this hotel and this presents a safety concern for any traveller needing taxis to get around.

We were staying during the Global Automotive Conference, this hotel was fully booked with many international visitors. This sort of mess with the taxis is totally unacceptable.

Even with a great product, nothing can compromise the integrity of the hotel staff and safety of the passengers, which this hotel fail miserably. This is the reason for the terrible rating.

I will send this review directly to the hotel and hope the management will take steps to address the issues. My company is a corporate customer with Intercontinental, plus other hotels in Chengdu, I will express my warnings to my colleagues and recommend them to use others until improvements are made.
