“Crowded and packed with tourists”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 8, 2012

If you're a fan of the three kingdoms, this is a place for you! Temple is well maintained and what you get to see are mostly statues of the officals in the Shu kingdom, mostly notably Zhuge Liang. Be there early to avoid lots of tourists.

“Only worth it if you're familiar with The Three Kingdoms”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 10, 2012

Wuhou Memorial
We loved this place mainly because we had read "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" by Luo Guanzhong before. The Three Kingdoms period less significant in Chinese history but certainly one of the most romanticized periods, thanks to Luo Guanzhong's novel. During that period, Sichuan belonged to the Kingdom of Shu, which was at almost constant battle with two other kingdoms for more than 100 years. Wuhou Memorial is dedicated to the heroes of those battles. If you're not familiar with the Three Kingdoms at all, don't bother paying the rather steep entrance fee of 60 RMB, unless you're in the neighbourhood or have enough time to spare. It's a big, well-kept place with a pretty neat bonsai garden, but it’s also swamped with Chinese tour groups. If you do decide to go, I highly recommend taking a knowledgeable guide with you. Zhuge Liang, the military advisor of the King of Shu, even 1800 years after his death, is still regarded as one of the most gifted and brilliant strategists China ever had. It might even inspire you to read the book. Just be aware that you’re in for a Lord of the Rings epic. But you’ll understand a lot more about China and its regional differences that are very much alive until this day. Sichuanese are very proud of their history, and they should be.

If your time is limited, rather visit the very underrated Daoist Qingyang Palace (Green Ram Temple), which is fairly busy all day but mostly neglected by foreign tourists, and/or the nearby Baihuantan Park along the Jinjiang River with plenty of teahouses. You’ll have a much more cultural experience than at Wuhou Memorial.
