“Okay. Never seen a panda before?”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 30, 2014

If you have never seen giant pandas, go to this center IF you are in the area. It is not worth going way out of your way. There are many places around the world to see pandas (i.e. San Diego and Washington DC). If you haven;t seen any before and are in Chengdu, then go here on a nice day. It is a small modern zoo and has only pandas and red pandas, all in outdoor enclosures. But as a "research center" I expected much much more - like seeing where they are born, raised as infants, etc. - an actual research center, not just some outdoor zoo enclosures. We saw about 5 enclosures. The red pandas were new to me. In ONE spot we saw a baby panda in a crib. Bathrooms: 9 out of 10. Food: 2 out of ten (did not see any cafe or place to buy food). Several small gift shops. Clean, well run, just very disappointing on the pandas. Lots of uphill walking. If you wish, you can be photographed standing next to a person holding a panda - cost is about $150 per photo.

“a giant zoo for two species”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 27, 2014

Nice landscaping and if you go early enough there are no crowds and the pandas seem to be more active. I wouldn't pay the extortion to hold one, though. What a rip off.

“THE place to see Pandas”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 26, 2014

The research base is set in beautiful surroundings with numerous enclosures. We went in January so tourists were mainly local. The small numbers of tourists allowed excellent views of the Pandas, the favourite being the babies who provided much amusement. A must do when in Chengdu.

“So cute”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 25, 2014

You absolutely must see pandas if you go to China and this is a really good place to see them. We had awful weather and it was pouring with rain, but this meant the pandas were out playing as it wasn't hot. The centre is set up with park like enclosures, so the pandas can disappear into the trees if they want, or play on viewing platforms where the bamboo is left out for them. There is quite a bit of walking but there is a little land train if needed. Most of the focus is on the Giant pandas but there are some red ones too. The best bit was the neonatal unit with the tiny baby pandas, cutest things on the planet! You could pay £200 to have a 'keepers experience" which meant you could put on a gown and cuddle a young 1-2yr old panda, but our tour group wasn't told in advance and they only take cash or chinese cards. I didn't do it, but people who did said it was expensive but an experience they would always remember. (The money goes to the research programme.). Pansa watching is quite addictive but if you can tear yourself away, there is a nice coffee shop, and the giftshops are well priced and have suitably panda orientated gifts.

“A must go in Chengdu”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 21, 2014

The pandas are soooo cute and adorable. They are lazy and peaceful. Don't even want to make a big move =)

My boy friend's first time seeing a real panda and both of us were amazed and loved this creature so much! Wonder how they survived all these years with their lazy character. If they drop off the tree while eating, they wouldn't even move and will kep their position lying on ground and eating their food... Adorable! The mini pandas were not black and white. Instead as they are too little they are grey and white!! They were trying to stand up but couldn't... So cute we couldn't stop laughing.

This place is a must when you visit Chengdu!
