“Very well maintained park”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 7, 2012

The park was so well kept, clean. Even the bathrooms were excellent. There were many pandas to see. It was not crowded and so it was very pleasant.

“Well you have to just rate the pandas”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 7, 2012

This is a beautiful spot in Chengdu. Its like being in a well maintained jungle. The grounds are well kept, the service is very good and of course the pandas are amazing. I went early in the morning on a weekday so it was not crowded and even then its annoying to see all the clamoring for photos. I cannot imagine what it would be like when busy. If you are sensitive to these animals, you might get a little down seeing all the people endless trying to bait them into smiling or what not. There is a good movie that plays on a loop and a small gift shop that to be honest was lame.

“Don't go on Weekends”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 7, 2012

I visited the Chengdu Giant Research Panda Base twice in Nov 2012. First time on a Saturday, the place was packed with locals. Locals do not treat the Pandas as their National Treasures. They intimated and yelled at them just to get a photo on their cel phones. They are noisy and even threw food into the enclosures (a no no). If you are a Panda lover, do not go there on weekends.

The second time we visited was on a Wednesday, no crowds, no locals, just a few bus load of very polite foreigners.

They have 20 exhibits, premises were very clean, very touristy though. Food inside was minimal and expensive, try to bring your own.

The Panda centre is on the outskirt of northern Chengdu. A normal cab ride there should metered out to be Y$55, but it is hard to find a city cab driver willing to take you there,. You might be lucky enough to get one (during non rush hour) and negotiate a price of Y$80+. There is a bus 60 next door (in front of Traffic Hotel) to Xinnanmen Bus Station. This is the only direct bus from Chengdu city centre to Panda Road, and walk the 1 km to the entrance.

“I am a Panda & I love Pandas!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 4, 2012

Panda base is one place in Chengdu you cannot miss! The sight of these adorable pandas will melt your heart. You can simply spend the entire day watching these pandas as they just keeps on eating and playing. If you are lucky enough, you get to see baby pandas being brought out for a nice sun tan. Try to be there early as you get to see the Pandas being fed and to avoid huge crowds. Other than pandas, you get to see peacocks and swans around this base.. Beware of the taxi touts outside the panda base. There is plenty of taxi that charge by the meter so transport is not a concern.

“Must See Place for Panda Lovers”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 27, 2012

My wife and I enjoyed seeing the Pandas at the Beijing Zoo, but we enjoyed the Pandas here at the Chengdu Panda Research center much more. Here in Chengdu, the Pandas are in a habitat that is more natural - rain forest region with lots of vegetation and trees. The landscaping here is very lush and beautiful, almost to the point of being a visitor attraction in itself. This is in contrast to the Beijing Zoo which is what we expect to see in a normal zoo - minimal landscaping and zoo style enclosures. However, here in Chengdu, the Pandas have much larger areas to move around in and the rain forest style landscaping is great.

I have read in a prior TripAdvisor review that they were not able to see any Pandas at any of the areas in the Chengdu center. While we were there, we saw many Pandas (see photos attached). The Chengdu center is large in size so you need comfortable walking shoes in order to see the whole area - you may not see Pandas near the entrance so you will need to walk to at least the central part of the Panda Center where we found most of them.
