“Unremarkable 4* experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 9, 2012

Kempinski has been around for a while in CDU and the hotel shows a few signs of wear. Nevertheless it is a reasonable option and a good bit cheaper than the nearby Shangri-La. The furnishings are a bit dark which gives the place a slightly dingy feel but the rooms are fairly clean and the lively German bar/restaurant lends a certain vibrancy.
I have stayed here several times and it is well used by western travellers. It does the job and will not hurt your pocket too much. The staff are smiley and helpful in a genuine sort of way. I will probably return since the downtown location is very convenient.

My husband and I had brunch there last Sunday and it was very good although too pricey for what you get at 250 yuan per person with drinks included. The pancakes were cold and the bread selection has gone down. It was not as good as last year. We were able to make a reservation with no trouble. There's still a bit of a language or communication barrier between the wait staff and English speaking customers, but that is to be expected. Overall, it was a very enjoyable experience both aesthetically and gastronomically.

Room Tip: They did not allow us to take photos.

This is really a hassle-free and top notch hotel. The room is spacious and the bathroom has everything I needed and more. Breakfast is great and the Paulaner Restaurant offers authentic German cuisine. Everything works and I have no complaints.

The only funny thing is the vehicle entrance, the road dips and then comes up again as you turn right. Be careful if you are driving here.

My husband and I stayed here over our 'weekend' and took advantage of their Sunday/Monday cheaper rate. The room was great--spacious and cool--and I was able to take a bath for the first time in several years. Awesome. Check-in and check-out was easy and fast, and I can honestly say that I'll probably stay with Kempinski exclusively in the future. We'll have one here in Chongqing very very soon. Added bonus was, of course, the Paulaner house, which didn't disappoint. Beyond the beer, they have a pretty incredible food menu. A few notes: the KTV in the Kempinski is ridiculous (1600 rmb minimum). The shower in our room (1216) left a lot of water on the floor because there was a gap between the frame and the door. Also, don't eat the buffet. It's misleading and bland, and the food at Paulaner is waaaaaaay better.

Our local contact suggested this hotel as being easily accessible for coming in and out of the city, a little bit away from the congested city centre. This seemed to be the case. There was not much around the hotel for walking, but the subway is nearby for easy access into town. The room was nice and food good quality. Shower hotel water was intermittent, which was annoying! Executive room with club access was good value for money.

So Chengdu is not exactly the five star capital of China ... so we weren't sure what to expect. Overall is was a good, average hotel. Would have been a 3 star in the US.

Staff very friendly and helpful. Most struggled with english. When we asked for foam pillows it took quite some time to explain. Room was comfortable but it was tough to lower the temperature.

Wifi coverage was very good. Strong signal.

We ate at the Seasons restaurant (buffet) for breakfast 2 mornings. Very good. Standard buffet you'd find at other western hotels in Asia. Had it all. Had dinner one night there as well. Was just ok. French Onion soup was bad. Burger was good. My partner had the curry and loved it. (very spicy)

One big, big disappointment. The gym (fitness room) didn't open until 10AM. Yes, 10AM. So when we woke up early and wanted to work out before breakfast (our normal practice and from number of people in most hotel gyms in the morning, a normal practice of alot of people!) we found the door locked. We were hoping it was only the spa - but unfortunately it included the gym as well.

As far a Chengdu and the hotel location, we liked it. That being said, make sure you book a car and driver to get around. Don't rely on cabs or walking. (We found a great driver through a tripadvisor forum recommendation.)

Our guide told us the only hotel in Chengdu that was better was the Shangri La. Given the huge price difference, we were generally happy with the Kempinski.

We only stayed in this hotel for 3 nights, and our experience was very positive.

The bed in the room was super comfortable, the bathroom has separate shower and tub, very nicely designed.

Huge breakfast buffet, we had no complains, all different kind of western and Chinese selections for one to choose.

The pool is amazing, truly! the wonton soup ordered by the pool was so delicious. And the foot massage by the pool was heavenly.

Chengdu is a beautiful city to visit, we didn't have enough time to explore and socked in. It's very different than Beijing, it's still a bit laid back and a lot of cultures and history, and the famous SiChun food is there for you to taste in all different ways. And this is where the hotel lost it's points, it's location is not the best. It's not centrally located.
