Brief version: squalid, poorly located, overpriced, unfinished, deceitful.
Longer version: Here's the deal. We needed a place to stay as soon as we arrived in Chengdu after a 16-hour train trip from Xi'an (note: never buy hard seats). This place was rated fifth on TripAdvisor so we just booked without looking it up. Another note: always check the sample size; turns out there were only five reviews that all sound like they were written by the same person. Anyway, the place had a deluxe double suite overlooking a garden with private bathroom and communal kitchen, etc. Great! Turns out the place is on the outskirts of Chengdu; taxis don't know how to get there. Takes a metro trip and a bus ride that takes about 45 mins to get there. If a taxi does happen to know where it is, it will take just as long, since traffic is terrible. Also, this is not a hotel. Nor Is it a hostel. It is an apartment in an apartment building. There are other people living in the same apartment. Everyone shares the same bathroom except the people in the deluxe double. Even the private bathroom is filthy, however. I repeat: our private bathroom was not cleaned; it was gag-inducingly filthy. The floor was covered in dirt and mold and the shower did not drain. The long black hair of the former occupant was everywhere. Two of my friends refused to take showers. The public restroom is unusable it is so disgusting. And the kitchen had a pile of trash in the middle of the floor. There is poorly functioning AC in the deluxe double but there is none in the standard. Also, the standard double has only one bed. None of the beds have mattresses, only mattress pads on wood. The apartment is still under construction. Read that again ,please. There is a patio but no door in the standard double. Nor is there a garden. The view is of the opposing apartment complex. By 'garden' the ad probably meant the trees between the two complexes. What a joke. The place is run by an incompetent man who showed us our room, took our money ,and left without a word.
We spoke to locals after we got this room. They laughed, told us there were cheaper rooms in clean hostels in the middle of the city. So please stay at one of those instead. Apologies for typos; I'm writing this on a phone from Tibet I'm so intent on excoriating the place as soon as I can.
