“Great Alternative to Hotel Room”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 20, 2013

I have been traveling in China for almost a month now, and the Somerset Riverview is a much needed alternative to the basic hotel rooms I have been in. I have a one bedroom King executive room on the 29th floor facing the river and it is by far the best room I have ever stayed in, anywhere! Big living room, kitchen, bedroom, and bath. Bed is the most comfortable I have had in China. Location is great, except to get a taxi. 7-11 right next door where you can buy cold beverages, Subway right next to 7-11 in case you need some food besides Chinese. Wireless is fast and easy to get on, wired service even faster. AC and heat work great! Staff is so helpful and friendly, had a complicated stay and they did everything to make it easy on me. I was really impressed. Breakfast is wonderul, omelettes/eggs made to order, great western choices, fresh fruit, good juice.
Lory Rao and Ying Ying Li at the front desk are the best. Amber Zhao and Amy Li my housekeepers were awesome. Folded my cloths for me, washed my dishes, my room was immaculate every day. Thanks Ladies, I really appreciate you making the end of my trip enjoyable!

The only thing to be aware of is, this hotel is on a one way street right next to the river. Taxis really don't go down this street and they drop you off about 1/2 block away. Not good when it is pouring down rain, standing water of about 2 inches and you have to drag your luggage to the door. I was soaked by the time I got the hotel and the taxi driver refused to go around the block to drop me off in front, even though my chinese business partner tried to get him too! Don't try to get a taxi on your own, ask the doorman to get you taxi and they will. Just realize it may take a while, especially 4pm-7pm, don't cut your timing to close as you can wait up to 40 minutes to get a taxi at this time. Ask the front desk to write down the name and address of the hotel in Chinese and keep it with you, makes it much easier to show it to the taxi drivers and get you back to the hotel.
I would highly recommend the Somerset Riverview to anyone, business or leisure trip. I will not stay anywhere else in Chengdu.

Dear Berlywa,

Greetings from the friendly team here at Somerset Riverview Chengdu - Your trusted "home away from home"!

Thank you for your encouraging feedback, it means so much to us here that you enjoyed your stay with us.

At the Somerset Riverview Chengdu, we pride ourselves on providing each and every one of our guests an unforgettable experience that is probably on rivalled by home itself!

From fresh linen to plush beds ensuring a great rest; from freshly cooked eggs (done in any way you like) to freshly grounded coffee ensuring a revitalizing breakfast; from a sprawling fitness facility to a magnificent sky view from the highest point in Chengdu (our 34th floor Sky Garden) etc, the possibilities in which we like to wow you is limitless! Enjoy a highly customized service experience in our private sanctuary where our dedicated Ascott Hosts (our superior concierge service) knows everyone and one that really feels like coming home to a family that has been expecting your arrival!

Simply click and book, and then leave all the details to us. That's our promise. And in that, i am glad that me and my team here at the Somerset Riverview Chengdu had managed to deliver our promise to you. Your satisfaction is and will always be our main priority in whatever we do here.

Thank you for also taking time out to suggest ways in which we can better improve our product and service. I am excited to inform you that we will soon resolve the problem of taxi drop-off for our guests. We are currently undergoing a minor property enhancement, that will soon allow vehicles to steer into our compound where guests can comfortably alight, right in front of the main entrance.

To also circumvent the difficulties in hailing a taxi, we have been working with a renowned (and safe) taxi operator- Comfort Delgro here in Chengdu. While i note the challenges in hailing a taxi during peak hours, please rest assured that our front desk and security officers are extremely efficient in radio-ing for taxi support at any time of the day. Do let us know slightly in advanced when you require a taxi, and leave the worries to us! Our promise. Your satisfaction. Always.

Once more, Berlywa, thank you very much for your positive support of our property. It has been a joy serving you and on behalf of me and my team here, take care and see you really soon back "home"!

With best wishes,
Mervin Ho

This being our third time staying in this property tells you how much we liked it. We had an one bedroom apartment and a studio. Both were equipped with full kitchen including utensils, standard fridge, electric stove, microwave, toaster, rice cooker, coffee maker and convection oven!!! It's impressive. Great to cook up a simple meal for the family when we got tired eating out.

There was also a washer/dryer, laundry detergent, iron and ironing board provided. Flat screen TV with many TV channels. Stereo and DVD player also provided. Very thoughtful.

Rooms are of very good sizes. In the one bedroom apartment, there was the living room area, dining table that can sit 6 comfortably and also a small desk. Our toddler was happy to have so much space to run around in.

On the 3rd floor, there was an indoor pool (check it out but never used it), good size gym and play room which my toddler adored. It is also on the third floor lounge where the breakfast is served. More on breakfast later.

The hotel rooms are all located above 16/F so you will usually get a good view of the river or the city (depends on your facing). One of my favorite things to do was to sit and read on the very wide ledge next to the full size window with the panoramic view of the city as the backdrop.

The shower head in our room wouldn't stay up and the air con had a funny smell initially. But both problems were swiftly fixed the next day by Engineering after a call to reception.

A little more about the location. Located next to the river, it's great for our toddler to go for a riverside walk and spend his energy. Also fun to see the local group of old folks practicing taichi in the morning.

It's a 5-10 min walk to the nearest subway station outside the landmark JinJiang Hotel. Getting a taxi was a nightmare though. The main entrance of the hotel is actually located on the smaller road along the river, not along the main road Ren Min South Road, as the address of the hotel indicated. It can be slightly more challenging for first time visitors or taxi drivers to locate. The main entrance does not have a proper drive way, just a flight of steep steps along the road. I found it very dangerous for the small one to cross the busy traffic and board the taxi.

2 min to the right of the hotel is a Subway outlet and 24 hour convenience store 7-eleven. Great for grabbing some take out on way to the Panda reserve and Teddy Bear Museum where there were extremely limited dining options.

One thing that costs the hotel the full 5 rating in this review was the presentation and quality of the breakfast. Very limited seatings were available so you may have to end up seating on the bear counter during morning rush hour. There were no table placing. It was more like a school canteen where you grab your own seat and take your own utensils (which were not duly replenished) from the bar. There was very limited "hot" food selection and the "hot" food was not heated so sausages and noodle look all sad and oily after 9am. There was one combined egg and noodle station so service could be slow. Bread was stale. Even my todder refused the bread there. Orange juice was the local packed quality, not freshly squeezed. Coffee and tea were weak.

All in all, given the price, I think it's a good value for money. Only wish they can improve the taxi situation and the breakfast for sure.

Dear Sevenheaven1,

Greetings from your "home away from home" - The Somerset Riverview Chengdu!

Thank you for your fantastic review, we are most honoured to have been of service to you and your family this time round.

At the Somerset, we always pride ourselves on offering a familiar and cozy home for our guests, combined with top-notch facilities and at unbeatable locations and prices. It is very heart-warming and a great boost of confidence to us that we managed to provide you and your family with a great stay experience!

Please rest assured that your feedback on breakfast is well-received. Allow me to address the very constructive feedback you had kindly provided to us.

Our dining area has a capacity of around 60-70 and i agree that this poses a challenge, especially during morning rush hour. We actively encourage our guests to use the comfortable lounge area located beside the dining area, to enjoy their breakfast. In addition, we will also open up the meeting room located near to the Customer Service Desk for breakfast service, subjected to demand. Given the limited dining space, we are actively exploring ways to ensure that our guests can enjoy their breakfast without going through the hassle of locating seats during such peak hours.

Our "Hot" items (usually 5 to 6) are replenished constantly and kept heated while on display at the buffet spread. I would like to apologize for this service lapse during your stay, that you found the food not heated and choices limited. Informatively, we will be introducing a wider spread of authentic Singaporean/Malaysian cuisine in the upcoming month to add more variety to the current mix. We will continue to work closely with our vendors to explore better bread, juices, coffee/tea selection, as i fully understand that no breakfast can be complete without a good pairing of a freshly squeezed orange juice, a hot and toasty slice of bread and a full-blooded shot of coffee/tea in the morning.

Sevenheaven1, i am confident we will be able to provide a greater, completely fuss-free, experience on your next stay with us. We will not spare any effort to ensure we get everything right on your next stay with us. Thank you once more for your support and patronage of our property and I am eagerly looking to welcoming you back again!

With best wishes,
Mervin Ho

We stood for five nights and it was an excellent choice, as we were three people and the apartment was very spacious, so the extra bed was in the living room, and separatelly there was the suite room with the bathroom. Even we were not looking for an apartment itself (a hotel would gave been ok), we chose Somerset because of the location, and the good price comparing with the others around, and it was perfect choice. Only 25 min from the airport by taxi, and the subway is in walking distance, and also some local restaurants around. Other restaurants choice are at 10 to 15 min walk, or shirt taxi ride. Staff very helpful, friendly and fluent in English. I would stay again.

The hotel is excellent and very suitable for longer stays.
Pros:
-the rooms are huge (i had a studio which was i believe the smallest option, but the rooms was still very big)
-fully equipped kitchinette
-wifi and wired internet in the room and a lot of english language channels
-very good gym and swimming pool
-extremely clean, very helpful staff
-close to a carrefour store and a walk away from tianfu square
-the breakfast, although seemed poor actually had a lot of choices: egg station, cereal, fresh fruit, pastries, salads, cheese and cold cuts (if you arrive a bit early),espresso etc
-they offer cookies, juices and coffee in the afternoon in the 3rd floor lounge (where the breakfast is)
Cons:
-difficult to find by taxi drivers, even with the map they have on the back of their hotel cards
-the restaurants accross the river were in a building that is being torn down

Having stayed at the kempinski 2 years before for double the price, i would say somerset is a better option in chengdu.

Dear Sup3rgirl,

Warm greetings from your "home away from home" - The Somerset Riverview Chengdu!

I am glad that we managed to exceed your expectations in your stay with us. It is certainly very heart-warming to receive your commendation on our facilities and our customer servicing.

At the Somerset, we pride ourselves on providing our guests with not just spacious room spaces, easy "plug-and-play" amenities but also a customer servicing team that is attentive to the finest details. You can be assured that every stay with us all over the globe, will be one that is consistent and familiar, with all the touches of a "home away from home".

On the same note, i appreciate your feedback on the difficulties of locating taxis as well as your concern over dining options.

As your stay coincided with the ongoing Sugar and Wine fair here in Chengdu, taxis were in high demand throughout. However, i would like to assure you that we have an exclusive collaboration with a reputed taxi company and our friendly front office colleagues would be glad to help you book a taxi at your conveniences.

For dining options, we will soon introduce 2 reputed restaurants within our property premise. With exclusive privileges for our in house guests to dine in the comforts of your home or at the restaurant, i am confident your concerns will be addressed very quickly. In addition, we also have food delivery options, offering a wide gamut of different cuisines according to your preferences. Once more, our friendly front office colleagues would be glad to assist and make recommendations and reservations for you, per your personal preferences.

Once more, Sup3rgirl, thank you for your support and patronage of the Somerset, i am eagerly looking forward to welcoming you back to your "home away from home" very soon!

Mervin

We stayed here for three nights. When we opened the door we were amazed at what A$140/ night had bought us. A beautiful apartment with all the comforts of home in a great location with a great view. The bed was the best I've ever had in a hotel. There is a 7/11 next door which sells everything including alcohol. Overall it was hard to fault. When you leave the apartment, make sure you head over the river and it's a 10 minute stroll to the heart of the city and shopping district. If you go in the opposite direction you will be disappointed. We were.

This is an excellent high quality Somerset Riverview Chengdu Apartment. We stayed in a Premier one bedroom Apartment (the Premier Apartments are located at the West end of each floor and have huge windows facing North and South overlooking the main street which provided a lot of excitement for us during our stay with magnificent views). It had a two burner stove and two door refrigerator, big study desk with fast cable internet, lots of seating, nice dining table & chairs and an air-conditioner that worked well. Safe was fixed to the wall. There was no dishwasher and no place to hang your wet washing which is a negative. Only one breakfast was included in our price, but as it was our first time in China they offered a second breakfast for free. It had good choices for Chinese or Western Foods. The Chef made fresh fried eggs on request and bacon was available. Carrefour, a local supermarket within walking distance, had very poor fruit and vegetables, some Western foods and only accepted cash, no foreign credit card. We have stayed in each of the three Ascott Brands of apartments in China – Ascott, Somerset and Citadines and found them all excellent and would have no hesitation in recommending the above brands in China.

Room Tip: Book the Premier One Bedroom Apartment, it has a huge floor area, with magnificent views North and S...

Dear TravelPlanner 2000,

Thank you for taking precious time out to provide us with your valuable feedback.

Our property offers a panoramic view of the famous Jinjiang River, nestled in the tranquil and lush surroundings right in the middle of the city centre. I am glad that you enjoyed the excellent view from our Premier 1 Bedroom suites!

At Somerset Riverview Chengdu, we pride ourselves on always going the extra mile for our guests and i am pleased to note that we managed to meet and exceed your expectations in a) providing an extra complimentary breakfast as well as b) prompt servicing by our chef in preparation of your morning breakfast of fresh eggs and bacon.

I note that you have raised 2 excellent suggestion where we can further improve on our existing product offerings, namely the lack of a dishwasher and a rack to hang wet laundry.

At this moment, our apartment units do not come equipped with a dishwasher and a clothes rack for wet washes, but we will certainly take this concept onboard in our future property enhancements.

In the meantime, all our apartment units are equipped with our own in-house dishwashing liquid. We would be glad to assist in helping to wash your dishes, if requested. In addition, our washing machines are also fully equipped with self-contained, dual wash-and-dry facilities to ensure our guests face minimal hassle in completing their laundry.

Once more, thank you for choosing to patronize our serviced apartments and allowing us the opportunity to "wow" you. I eagerly look forward to welcoming you back to Chengdu and the Somerset Riverview Chengdu.

Yours Sincerely.

At least, in our experience in China, Somerset Riverview Chengdu is the BEST!! We only have one night in Chengdu and was tempted to change our itinerary and flights to have another comfortable night here. Let's start from the check-in - friendly, polite, confident and efficient staff. They performed well under pressure of multiple guests checking in at the same time. Cleanliness is meticulous. We love our spacious room on a high floor overlooking the city - furnishing is warm and welcoming. Wifi works well. iPod speakers. Big TV screen. Washing Machine. Breakfast spread was good and clean. Value for money! Highly recommended!
