During our China trip, we stayed at several big name 5-star hotels but decided to try this hotel in Chengdu to cut costs. BuddhaZen was unlike any other hotel we've stayed in. The hotel is located in "Old Town" with a unique exterior resembling a temple. Because it is set within a courtyard filled with many stands selling local food, trinkets, jewelry, souvenirs, etc. there is limited access by car, and we had to roll our luggage through the courtyard a distance before reaching the hotel. There are also no elevators, but the bellhops were quick to assist us in bringing our luggage to our rooms on the 2nd floor. The setting is very serene & peaceful. In the evening, we enjoyed roaming around, browsing through the stands just outside the hotel, checking out Tibetan beads, local spices, and sampling steamed buns for breakfast. The breakfast provided at the hotel is very modest, not a huge selection. We also had a few plumbing issues in our room which were quickly resolved by the time we returned that evening. Although this is an older building, there are some modern touches for guest convenience. The hospitality of the staff was the best we received out of all the hotels we stayed on our China trip. We were warmly greeted when we arrived, and also when we departed. Thank goodness there was A/C, which some of the larger hotels did not have! Free wi-fi was awesome. The room was a little dark, but the beds were incredibly comfortable, and I fell asleep the instant my head hit the pillow!
