“Best Western / American Food in most of China”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 2, 2014

Nice atmosphere and good food most of time. Both 'regular' and Mexican food can not be beat.
I have visited by myself, on dates and in groups - works all the time any time of day.

“Pleasant surprise”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 15, 2014

Just finished eating here. Food was good even if portions were relatively small. A pleasant atmosphere and a waiter that does understand English.

“Pleasant surroundings, average food”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 5, 2013

The restaurant lloks lovely, and is both comfortable and relaxing.
the menu offers Chinese andf Western food ...and we chose Western, having been in Chengdu for a couple of weeks and wanting a change of diet.
Chengdu's reputation for spicy food was not lost on the staff of this restaurant ... consequently, the meal we had was extremely spicy, to the point of not actually being able to taste the food! And this was a western dish, but it didn't cause the chef to hold back.
As a result, it rather spoilt the flavours.

“OK if you really need a fix of Western food”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2013

We were visiting in Chengdu and went to Grandma's mainly so our nephew and his roommate, both students at nearby Sichuan University, could have some Western food. Grandma's offers a nice assortment of Western dishes, from pizzas to hamburgers (although they were out of buns on the evening we visited). The food was fine, nothing special, and seemed a bit expensive for what you got. If you really need a burger or some other Western fix, it's a good choice. Otherwise, especially if you're visiting Chengdu, stick with the amazing Sichuan cuisine, hot pot and other local choices.

“Nice Summer Surprise”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 25, 2013

We decided to strike out today to have lunch in a new place, and since we'd seen Grandma's Kitchen several times from the street, decided to give it a try. We were impressed from the moment we entered, with a very attentive wait staff ready to help us with getting our baby and stroller to a comfortable location. We were also impressed by the design of the place, sitting in the back where it feels like you are in a cozy garden cafe. We had an extremely helpful waiter who was always buzzing around making sure we had everything we needed, and while his English wasn't perfect, it was just fine. Like a previous reviewer, we had to do a bit of miming to get a couple of things, but it didn't bother us a bit. After all, we're in China, not Charleston.

But of course, those things are just nice additions, but meaningless if the food disappoints. Thankfully, that wasn't the case for us. My son was overwhelmed with the choices in the menu, wishing that he could eat everything. He and my daughter both settled for cheeseburgers, and they loved them! The meat patties were huge, and came with either a healthy portion of fries, or a very nice potato salad. My wife enjoyed a cheesesteak sandwich, and her only complaint was that she would have liked to have had potato salad but it wasn't offered. I had chicken quesadillas, and thought they were quite tasty, with just enough kick to make them interesting. We also had potato skins as an appetizer, and they were also quite nice, and came with *gasp* sour cream. This was a nice surprise.

We ended up spending a few hours at the Kitchen, me utilizing the free wifi, and the kids enjoying reading some books we'd brought along. It was a very cozy atmosphere for what had started out as rather boring summer day. We enjoyed our time at Grandma's, and since it lies right on the bus route for bus 78, we plan to find our way here more often.

Just a final caveat - I know that people have different experiences and expectations, but I was quite surprised when I got here and read the many negative reviews. Our experience has been extremely positive, and we were very glad we came!
