“Good but not too impressive hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 18, 2012

The hotel room were clean, new and modern. Wifi in room available. The hotel is a big hotel and I have a feeling of too many people everywhere in the hotel. They dont have enough staffs to take care of the guests and the check in took too long than it should take. Breakfast was good. Everything was fine , just too many guest and need more personel to improve service.

Dear guest, thank you for your stay and the message left for us to improve. We are pleasured to provide with comfortable room and foods during your business trip, while we are sorry for taking too much time for your check-in. It is kindly suggested that you may bring up your preference of less noisy room during reservation so that it is easier for us to arrange as much as we could in advance. Sincerely, we are expecting your next cozier stay here.

The rooms are great - very well equipped and maintained. No doubt, this hotel lives up to the very high quality you may expect in Chinese hotels. My only comment is that the receptionists were exceptionally slow, but otherwise it is a very good hotel.

I stayed at this hotel for four nights while on a business trip to Chengdu. Hotel is large and very clean with very friendly and service oriented people. Breakfast buffet was included in price and was great with a large variety of choices. Rooms are spacious and very clean. I had a corner room on one of the top floors with a really good view. At least I think it would have been a great view if it weren't for constant smog and pollution. The area around the hotel has some shops and restaurants although I did not explore it in depth. My only complain about the hotel was the smoking. The whole hotel reeks of it. There people smoking in the lobby and even elevators and the hotel is not enforcing their own non smoking policy. Overall I would stay at this hotel again or try intercontinental across the street.

Non-smocking areas are set not for décor, but for guest comfort stay. It is appreciated that you raise this issue up. Hotel will certainly and continuously enforce non smoking policy with support from all sides. We are hereby looking forward to your next trip to Chengdu in Holiday Inn.

This was five star service and amenities at a great price. Our room was large and spacious, it gave us everything we needed in comfort. We found the staff to be very friendly and accomadating. In many cases they went out of their way to assist and ensure we were happy and comfortable. The breakfast buffet was extensive and the food offered was very good. The noodle bar was one of my favorites as they had everything you could want. The price of the hotel was fair and for the service it was a great find. We enjoyed our stay and will definitely return.

Room Tip: The hotel is a little out of the way but it is quiet and a pleasant setting. If you are not there f...

1 of 5 stars Reviewed April 6, 2012

Our experience at this hotel was such a shame. The building was impressive and the facilities were excellent. But the hotel is not being run properly and this has led to a number of problems, some of which were plainly and simply dangerous.

Check-in was a disaster. It took almost half an hour. This hotel was recommended to us through the cultural exchange bureau, and our host, who was with us, was terribly embarrassed. We reassured her that it wasn't a problem - after all these things happen right? We got to our rooms and all was well. The room was well appointed with a large bed, a small desk, a great bathroom (an amazing shower by the way) and good internet access.

Problems arose again at breakfast time. There was no service management, and therefore the breakfast room was chaos, the service was inept at best and the food had been prepared naively - to save time they had prepared everything early so everything was cold. Cutlery was dirty, coffee and tea never arrived and as there was no table management system, people were wondering around looking for a place to sit. Again - while the experience was unpleasant, we figured it was just one of those things. We had been spolt at our Chinese run hotels in Guangzhou and Zhuhai which had immaculate service. Probably too much to expect a western chain to match the standards right?

The next thing that was irritating was that the room cleaner barged into my room unanounced. She propped the door open with her cleaning bucket and got on with her work. Great that she was cleaning the room so well, but really - it would have been nice to have been asked, or even to have had the door shut while she did it. I'm just glad I was fully dressed at the time!

By day three we were all fed up with how badly our room keys worked. The system was a disaster. By the end of our stay, I had had to have 9 key replacements (one of them was my fault in fairness) and my colleagues had 7 each. The room keys simply wiped themselves after each use.

Day 3 was also the day things got dangerous. We returned from breakfast to find the corridor carpets had been lifted (the whole floor). The carpets had been rolled up and left outside bedroom doors, blocking fire escapes and lift doors. We took plenty of photos as we thought this was very dangerous. We had a busy day so figured they would fix things while we were out. Wrong. We returned at 10pm to find that a series of mats had been laid in a haphazard way, with massive trip hazards in front of the lifts, along the corridor, blocking fire escapes and in front of our rooms. With a visually impaired person in our party, someone tripped coming out of her room. Time to call the duty manager. Poor girl was horrified - she obviously didn't know this was going on. On the entrance to the lifts, a series of sharp nails were exposed - tripping over a carpet onto those would have been appalling. We suggested that the whole floor be closed. Still the fire escapes were block by random off cuts of carpet on both sides of the door. We were offered alternative rooms, but moving our stuff wasn't possible. The duty manager was very apologetic and explained that she would get things fixed the next day. No - apparantly the manager of the hotel told her that she should not listen to the concerns of the guests but instead listen to him. (Our host relayed this message to us.)The duty manager did her best, but she was obviously terrified she would lose her job - which we must say she absolutely should not. She did her best under ridiculous circumstances. She gave us our last night free of charge, however when we came to check out, we were treated very rudely and over charged for food that we had never ordered. We asked for assistance taking our luggage to reception, but were told they were too busy to help, so we brought our luggage down over dangerous carpet.

To be frank, this hotel stay was incredibly stressful. We left feeling like we were the most unreasonable people on the planet. I hate to think of myself as an over-demanding westerner, and to be honest, I'm pretty long-suffering and very much believe people have bad days and perfection isn't really always necessary. But this was ridiculous. It was a shame, as the hotel itself is quite lovely, but to us it became apparent that the only problem was the bad senior management which pervaded the place. Not bad duty management - but bad management at the top. The place is chaotic and we have been in touch with head office with full information (including much that is not included in this review) about all the issues as we saw them. I am sure they would not wish Holiday Inn to be represented in this way. Our main fear is for the helpful duty manager who did her absolute best - she does not deserve to lose her job as she was charming and as helpful as she could be under very difficult circumstances.

It goes to show, you can have a beautiful hotel with lovely facilities, but if the service is atrocious, it's hard to rate an establishment well.

This hotel ticks all the boxes, the buffet breakfast is extensive and top quality, the restaurant transforms at night to a sophisticated buffet style restaurant at reasonable cost. My room was spacious and luxurious with a large flat panel TV that could connect to the internet. The WiFi was free, a must for me. Although out of the centre of Chengdu but it’s only a cheap and short taxi ride. The staff was very efficient and friendly. There are some good restaurants nearby but they are not needed. I had colleges staying next door at the Intercontinental which was more expensive but no better.

Room Tip: All the rooms are good

This may be contradicting, location is poor but I chose it because of the location.

I chose it because it is the nearest western chained hotel to the airport as I have an early morning flight off Chengdu.

The property makes up for the poor location for touring the city, Century City isn't the place you want to be if you are here as a tourist, however if you have business dealings in Century City, this will be a good choice.

Property is of standard HI quality.

Upgrade was given during my stay, I used PC points.
