From what I understand, the "hostel" is just an office that has everything a normal hostel has (young, friendly, English speaking staff; organized trips; etc), but we were actually staying at the hotel next door. The rooms were spacious but had a bit of an odor and didn't feel very clean. On the plus side, the WiFi signal was strong and consistent, and Sam's Cafe was really, really good.

I went to Chengdu wo planning on where to stay and arrived by bus to the center of the city which felt like any large city. Prada, Burberry and any other luxury store you could think of. I was sure I was in the wrong place becuase the pics I had looked at were of lush forest. I guess that was a little way out of town. I ended up walking into this hotel asking to use their internet to find a decent place to stay. They were really helpful at the travel center next door and their prices were amazing. They are owned by the same people. They helped me get everywhere I wanted to go and never tried to sell me anything. The room was exactly what I thought I would get for $20-$30. Not bad wouldn't stay in that type of hotel w my wife but alone no big deal.

Room Tip: Just talk to the travel center next to the hotel they will help you the best with anything you are d...

Rooms are very tired. Shower curtain was much much too long but I guess not the cleaning lady or other staff realize it. Rooms are generally very neglected. No toilet paper provided....had to ask for it! Best to avoid until this place wakes up and provide better rooms.

First off, Sam's Guesthouse should not be confused with the apparently more popular Sim's Guesthouse. Both have gardens, and similar names, but don't be confused. Sam's is slightly more centrally located, but isn't nearly the welcoming expat/backpacker haven that Sim's is made out to be. This was our first mistake.

We had changed our travel plans at the last minute and instead of canceling and paying the fee, Sam's staff kindly changed our reservation to the following weekend. But when we arrived we didn't find the room we expected in the pictures. We ended up in a carpeted, very old and dingy room above the guesthouses' numerous mahjong rooms, which it turns out were well-used. The room reeked of cigarette smoke. Sure, it's Asia, so sometimes we expect to deal with that, but this was egregious. Between the old, porous surfaces (including the headboard) sucking in years of fumes, and the constant waft coming from below all night, we couldn't handle it. We asked for a non-smoking room only minutes after entering our room, and were promised a different one the following day.

The second room was better - newer finishings, a replaced bed, and most importantly, not carpeted. But it was still a smoking room, as indicated by the ashtray and signs asking not to smoke in the bed. It was a significant improvement, though. And we appreciated the staff's responsiveness to our request. This time we had a bigger bed, but the comforter was not scaled to fit the mattress and my fiance and I had to fight to stay covered through the night. We also managed to completely soak the bathroom the first time we turned on the shower - the hand-held shower head had lost the bottom screw in the holder, so when the water pressure turned on, the entire shower head spun around the one remaining screw with the force.

Upon returning our last night there, we found our keycard no longer worked in our room. We went to the main desk of Rong Cheng's, where they called Sam's outside office to inquire why it had been turned off. They said we hadn't paid our bill. We then had to take our receipt to Sam's desk to prove that we had paid in full upon arrival, and found they had made a clerical mistake after we switched rooms. It was more than a little frustrating, after all the trouble of moving rooms.

One of the main reasons we chose this hostel was the promise of relative quiet (compared with for example The Loft). But we did not find quiet here. Between the mahjong, a neighbor with a hacking cough at all hours, parking lot noise into the wee hours of the morning, an screeching alley cat fight at 3 AM, and early morning meetings of guests sitting outside our first floor window, we didn't sleep soundly at all the three nights we were there.

Verdict: it's cheap, and the staff was responsive, but the trade-offs are significant.

Note: Sam's rooms are actually managed and maintained by it's neighboring hotel, Rong Cheng (important for taxi drivers).

Room Tip: Don't stay above the mahjong rooms! They are up the spiral staircases.

Sam's is a bit tired; however, the location is great, the price is right, and the staff are friendly and helpful.

The rooms are clean and relatively comfortable, although they have seen better days with peeling wallpaper and musty bathrooms.

Sunny and the staff speak English and are always ready to help out where they can. They arranged airport pick up and drop off for me, as well as tour advice and booking.

Room Tip: The price is right

Sam's has a variety of different rooms available and the good ones are usually booked in advance, so it is advised to do so also. Not your typical boozy scene that you find hostels but a much more relaxed vibe.

The best rooms are located in the guesthouse which is over 300 years old. Beautiful gardens and very well kept room, with the comfiest blankets and pillows we have encountered yet in China.

However on our second night this room was booked so we shifted to another room (also managed by Sam's but in a different building). For the same price but one the 3rd level with no elevator. This room was OK, not great, bathroom was a bit dingy and the cleaning staff were extremely noisy.

The last option, for an additional 40 yuan, is in another building with an elevator. We stayed in this room a couple months back and it was really comfortable.

Location - Sam's is situated in a very central location, about 7min walk from Tianfu Square and the metro line.

They've just opened a small cafe serving a limited menu of Chinese and Western food. Nothing too exciting here but still good enough for a quick snack.

Lastly the staff. So helpful and their english is great which makes such a huge difference when planning your trip. Lots of different tours available from reception and they always seem happy to help with translations and directions etc.
