“A Great example of Chinese Temples”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 22, 2013

Probably worth doing this with a guide as the signs at this location don't explain the significance of the buildings and what the temples represent. This was worth a visit. Not so busy with tourists, and more enjoyable than most temples to stroll around. Great photo opportunities.

“Beautiful Temples”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 23, 2013

This place had many beautiful temples. I recommend going around with a tour guide, tour book or someone who knows what they are looking at if you are unfamiliar with the history. It was much more interesting hearing about the details in each temples - which statues were famous, how they have restored elements over time, the controversial statues, ancient tales behind the paintings, etc. The temples and the contents are a varied mix of old and new. It was nice to hear which parts were new (last 50 years) and which parts were truly ancient.

“A Very Pleasant Surprise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 2, 2013

Perhaps shouldn't have been surprised, but thought the works here were outstanding, interesting and beautiful. Overwhelming wood sculpture, murals and, of course, Buddhas

“Expensive, but empty”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 27, 2013

This temple is exceptionally good. It is huge and has been well-restored with spectacular artwork and statues. The buildings look almost Japanese in style, rather than Chinese and the whole complex is a marvel. The view from the pagoda is great and the best part is main hall with its ancient relics. The most amazing thing is that due to the high price (80 RMB, discounted to 60 for some reason), it is effectively empty. You will feel alone and able to intimately explore this wonderful set of buildings - a very rare commodity in China.

Absolutely worth the entry, best temple in Datong.

“Well maintained - tourist free photos!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 19, 2012

This is a pretty standard temple complex, with statues and many buildings. What pushed this above average for me was the underground copper or brass room under one of the pagodas. Visited in December when it was -10 and we were the only tourists in the entire complex. Very beautiful and large. We took many tourist free pics which is always a challenge.
