“Great place in an odd place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2013

Who knows exactly how we ended up in Datong, but being there you couldn't do better than staying at the Great Palace. For the price the room was palatial, we did Pilates on the (very clean floors) with room to spare. English downstairs wasn't fantastic but the willingness shown by the staff to do whatever was needed to make our stay comfortable was most laudable. Hats off!

4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 20, 2013 via mobile

Booked a standard room via ctrip and got an excellent deal on this 5 star hotel. Hotel itself is presentable, so were the rooms.
The entire staff were very hospitable, from the bellboys to the managers, all provided us with the utmost service, were some of the best I've encountered in China.
Agreed with the other reviewers, housekeeping needs work, the carpets were dirty, windows dusty (being Datong where it's dry and windy I can understand), but the worst part was finding a bunch of loose hair in the bathroom.
Five stars, minus the housekeeping.

Not bad for a 5 star hotel in China and we were told that this is one of the best in Datong. Interestingly it didn't have a very grand lobby but the room was chic and great for a couple, we loved it. However, just poor house-keeping, there was no hot water and they sent someone work on it in the bathroom for over 15min but they didn't clean up the place afterwards so we had to call them in again. Therefore, you might want to check on the water as soon as you get into the room. Other that that, everything else was fine. The breakfast buffet was more 4 star. There is a bottle shop and KTV club within the hotel complex.

This is a luxury hotel, by American standards. Hotel and room decor are quite elegant, with all the amenities that Americans expect. (Although the room rug was fairly dirty -- not surprising, given the level of air pollution in this city.) Our room had problems with adequate hot water.

I can't address the question of whether the staff spoke English, since we were accompanied by a guide who handled everything for us.

I LOVE the design of the rooms in this hotel, they are simply gorgeous. It is also very clean and comfortable. The staff here are extremely courteous, always attentive and ready to act immediately to help you and greet you enthusiastically with beautiful smiles as you pass by. This hotel is HUGE and it's easy to get lost navigating through the maze to the breakfast buffet. There was a nice selection of healthy dishes although the taste was nothing to write home about. The coffee was already premixed with milk and was mediocre at best. I agree with other reviews that this hotel is not foreigner friendly with very few desk staff speaking english. The hotel staff ended up recruiting me to help translate for 3 english speaking travelers from Madrid who had trouble with their credit cards and wanted to pick up some train tickets that had arrived via Express mail. They were there to see the Yungang Grottoes in Datong, which they later shared was the best part of their China trip thus far.... they had already visited Beijing and Shanghai.

Datong has built too many luxury hotels in the last two or three years. This has led to prices being low during non-peak times of year. I had a large room on the 22nd floor with a partitioned sitting area for under 400 RMB/night. Good breakfast and friendly service.

The location is rather far to the south, a long 13 RMB taxi ride from the Railroad Station. Not a lot of interesting places or small restaurants nearby. Mostly large furniture stores and a shopping mall.

I see a previous visitor criticized the English proficiency of the staff. That is not a valid argument, in my opinion, since this happens to be China. The language burden is on you, not on them.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the construction.

This is definitely not an "international" hotel. There are 10 girls behind the front desk but not one understands simple words like "hello" or "luggage" what turns every little request into a nightmare. Nobody seems to be in charge of anything or trying to help you. Our "non-smoking" superior room was very dirty and was definitely used as a smoking room before. So there are no true non-smoking rooms available (when you request a non-smoking room when checking in they ask you to wait at the front desk and spray your room quickly with some chemical weapon which stinks for 24 hours; when the spray smell is finally gone everything smells smoke again). They are supposed to have a non-smoking floor but it is in renovation.
When we gave laundry to wash they first did not give it back to us for unknown reasons. When we finally had it back they had changed the numbers of clothes we had given them on the bill so that we should pay more and how do you want to discuss this matter with people not speaking a single word English? Room cards do not work, fridge did not work, water in the room was missing, ... Checking out was an adventure. At the end we paid extra money for whatever I think it was a missing cup in the room which they could not find just that they let us go. Recommendation: Definitely try to go somewhere else!
The only positive experience in this hotel are the restaurants when you have found them, both the Chinese (when you are not sitting next to a group of heavily smoking Chinese) and the Thai; they have one person who is speaking English and the food is excellent. Although when this person is not there it is difficult to order food or drinks. We are in China for 2 months and stay often in guest houses where nobody speaks English but never found it so difficult to get along. By the way the Chinese guests and guides which helped us at the front desk found it particularly difficult as well to communicate with the staff. They said it is due to the fact that the hotel is new and the staff still untrained.

Room Tip: For the moment no non-smoking rooms available!
