“Hard not to be impressed.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 11, 2012

I only spent one night here on business, but the hotel reception was the most friendly I have encountered - anyplace. Staff anxious to answer all questions, help with luggage to the room, show the room, and to talk with you during departure to make sure your stay was enjoyable. Very quiet, spacious room which was spectacular in design an style. I had dinner and breakfast at the Elements restaurant and on both occasions the food and service were very good. The coffee was also excellent - the best I found on a 7 day China trip. The lobby and public area is enormous and stunning and I look forward to staying here again. The hotel is in a new development area with little traffic and it is far from the airport (which could be a good thing). I did not visit the private hotel beach but walking along the expansive public beach was peaceful and it was clean with very few people there in early November. Travel tip; It was hard to find really cold beer anywhere in China during my trip. The local beers are exceptional but if you want your beer served really cold, call ahead - tell them so, and ask that it be iced down for you prior to your arrival - or ask for an ice bucket with the beer if you forget to ask ahead.

Too big, too many people = low service. And we stayed in a club room with access to the lounge. No service at all.
If you expect service, don't go to this hotel, but if you expect good beach, probably this is the best one.

Room Tip: Face the sea

Dear Gourmet Traveler,

Thank you very much for staying with us and providing valuable feedback.

I was very surprised to read your feedback in regards to the low service on executive lounge. Lounge service is essential in a five star hotel for guests on executive floor and I sincerely apologize that we failed to deliver it to you.

I have shared your comments with our hotel management and immediate actions have been taken place to rectify the shortcomings. Please accept our sincere apologies for the inconvenience caused and unpleasant experiences you have encountered during your stay.

Please do let us know if we can be of any further assistance. I hope you will grant us the opportunity to make up for it and to serve you again during your next visit to Qingdao.

Thank you very much.

So our epic journey began at Qingdao airport at 11pm, with a taxi driver shouting at us 400yuan...We shrugged and said fine. After 1 hr 35minutes in an old cab going on Highways we arrive. Checkin was chaotic, and English is restrictive behind the desk. We ventured to the Paulaner bar, to be greated by a huge empty bar with 6 staff hanging around. A 5 euro beer later and we went to our room. The room decor is very very nice. Sweeping features, glass wall in bathroom, where you can watch tv from the tub. Bed comfortable and afforded a very good sleep. Balcony is big and spacious but empty, no furniture nothing. We went to our mini bar, to find empty. It took room service an hour to bring us warm beer, which we drank sitting on the floor of the balcony. We were not happy with our view of the back of Huangdao so the 'lady in red' at reception did move us to an ocean view, which was so much nicer. Swimming pools, small, and this is dissapointing considering the size of the complex. The spa is still not open. The beach is behind the hotel, and is private and gated area, that closes at night. The beach was strewn with rubbish and litter when we were there so was only nice for swimming, without a hundred eyes watching the westerners.

The elements restaurant is the best feature at the moment, the buffet areas are immense and there are chefs all over ready to cook up various foods fresh for you. Be it breakfast or dinner, staff are friendly here also. Note the hotel has convention centre for up to 3000 people so on occasion breakfast is chaotic, get in early.

Concierge, english skills do not exist, we managed to get a hotel car to the tunnel where we got bus 4 (not 3 like concierge said) to Qingdao centre. Total travel time about 1 hr. Therefore this hotel should be named, Kempinski Huangdao, not Qingdao. There is nothing, nada near the hotel. So be prepared for isolation.

We went to the business centre , to use a pc, and were greeted by 4 reservations staff using them. One jumped up, and asked me what I wanted to do on the PC, they would do it for me, I wanted to query flight info, and broke there chat to ask to use an actual pc, this lead to me taking one of theirs and 4 sets of eyes over my shoulder watching what I was doing. Therefore there is no Business centre...

Checkout involved calculators, and blatant breaches of credit card security which we had to address, the hotel car we ordered to the airport ended up being a normal cab, and we made another 1 hr 35 min drive (45euro) to the airport.

In short, unless you company is paying for you to go here for a convention, Don't bother, Qingdao has nicer and more well run hostels.

Room Tip: sea view rooms are a must

5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 5, 2012 via mobile

We spend 4 days at this hotel late June, begining July. We needed a rest from Shanghai, the heat and the crowd! It was just the place. It is not exacly in Qingdao, it is in a new area across the bay, linked by a tunnel. The taxi driver had a hard time finding the place, so we called the hotel and they explained it to the driver. Still, he got lost, asked everyone walking by and all this took an hour from the airport and 300Yuan. We did not try to go out of the hotel for the rest of our stay. The hotel is a huge complex with a beatiful lanscape in front. It has 3 restaurants, inside outside swimming pool, gym, and a very quiet private beach. (we had long walks and good swimming) The rooms are absolutely beautifuly design. We had a sea view with a little balcony but sadly with no chair on it. We made do without...but it would had been great. The service was warm and helpful. The staff was still in training (we arrived at the end of the soft opening) and full of good wills. We probably were very few clients not part of a group and at lunch time we were the only one in the dinning room but they always greated us with smiles.
I definitely recommend this hotel.

My husband and I went to Qingdao for a Baoao Conference and were booked into the Kempinski Hotel Qingdao. Let me start by saying that this hotel is scheduled to have their official opening in May 2012 so we were initially a little concerned whether all the facilities will be ready and the staff are sufficiently trained 7 months before their official opening. Well, what an absolutely wonderful surprise! The General Manager Mr. Pauschardt was literally around the clock checking that the meeting facilities were working well and services were well attended to at all the banquets. He even turned up at 6.30am at breakfast to make sure all the catering are in perfect order (they were !!) and what amazed us was that the staff were so well trained given that it is still in week one of their soft opening. We are both Diamond members of Hilton and also platinum members of the Intercontinental Group so we do have a reasonable level of expectation from international hotel chain and the Kempinski in Qingdao has surpassed all our expectations. We are definitely planning a return trip to Qingdao. Apart from the wonderful facilities and the beautiful room layout, the hotel is right by the water so it has a beautiful view of the ocean. A definite recommendation to any traveller looking for seaside resort in Qingdao.
