On our recent visit to Xi'an we stayed at the Sofitel Renmin Square. The hotel hired a driver and guide ($150 CDN for the day) to take us to the Terra Cotta Warriors complex which is located about 45 minutes outside of the city. The guide was able to give us some history of the area as we drove to the site. The site itself is in a park like setting. The excavation site consists of several very large buildings that protect the excavations. There are plaques throughout the "dig" to identify what you are looking at, however, I do recommend a guide to provide more in-depth information about these impressive warriors. There is a wonderful gift shop on site. I regret not buying the local jade. It was a good price as we later discovered. The whole complex is set in a beautiful park with a small collection of buildings that feature other arts and crafts. We went in January so it was very cold and some of the buildings were closed. Definitely worth a visit.
