It is now 25 years that there are Hilton Hotels in China and until a short while ago they were just that, Hilton hotels. Now, Hilton offers an array of Doubletree, Hilton, Conrad and Waldorf Astoria Hotels in China, so the question is, what’s the difference between these different brands?
If we take the Beijing and Guangzhou Hiltons as a standard bar, the Doubletree Hotels have somewhat smaller rooms with no designer phantasies expended on furniture and carpets, but otherwise have the same standard of comfort and service as the Hiltons. That’s exactly what the Shenyang Doubletree offers. The only criticisms I have regarding the rooms is that there isn’t any room safe (now a standard in many Chinese hotels); also, the shower enclosure isn’t quite sealed off against the bathroom, there is a visible gap in the seal against the wall, so if you aren’t careful with the shower you will have an inundation of the bathroom.
Another question is, does it make sense to pay extra for an executive room with access to the executive lounge? You can expect three things from the executive lounge: a freshly cooked breakfast away from the crowd, a comfortable and elegant place where you can invite guests for discussions, and in the evenings the offer of some tidbits of food together with wine and other drinks, which during a business trip with lots of eating will make it unnecessary to go to the restaurant in the evening. Compared with the standard mentioned, the choice of offerings is somewhat less at the Shenyang Doubletree, but that shouldn’t be too important, especially as the service is very attentive. So the executive lounge meets all your expectations, except in one point. They have covered almost all of the floor space with an array of square tables for two persons, with only a few sitting groups where you can settle down to talk something over. That leaves a somewhat quaint impression, like a German gasthaus or a tavern. You can certainly feel comfortable there, but the place doesn’t leave the impression of an elegant high-class drawing room.
