“Interesting view of life along the canals.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 17, 2014

Travelling along the grand canal by boat allows visitors a glimpse into the way of life of those who still live alongside suzhou's canals.

When choosing a boat tour, be sure to go with one that has low clearance + shallow draft boats. As far as I know, only 2 companies have boats that are allowed into the smaller canals that branch off from the main one.

“Go at night.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 3, 2014

During Lunar New Year I took a stroll at Guangji and Suzhou Shantang street. Found a boat, had a seat. Super chillin.

“Suzhou - Venice of the East”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 14, 2014

Suzhou is very close to Shanghai. Food is great, night markets, canals are well kept (called Venice of the East). There are many beautiful gardens.
Train system (bullet trains) are very fast and reasonable. Food sold on the train are similar to those sold in Japan.
There are many hotels, and most are inexpensive.
Malls are very modern, offering not just high-end products. There is much variety.
Food in restaurants are varied. Ordering is easy as most menus have pictures.
Taxis are plentiful and drivers are courteous. Good to have a ready map as many cannot speak English.

“Interesting view of life along this canal.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2014

I did not feel right giving this attraction a "three" or a four, so it is somewhere in between. We went during the day and the trip was very pleasant and very scenic. I have not included any pictures, but the pictures posted, give you a very good idea what we saw. As we moved along the canal we viewed and were viewed by the people sitting in restaurants and cafes. We took pictures of them taking pictures of us. Everyone waved and we waved back. Many of the building were very old and building additions and related work was remarkable. Broken stair case from a door facing the canal ingeniously repaired using plastic to replace the stone steps that were fitted in the wall. A tomato plant growing out of a crack in a wall with tomatoes ripening on the vine. Women with children sitting on a back porch facing the canal just viewing us viewing them and as always, waving hello.
We stopped and went ashore to a street felled with vendors selling just about everything. Came across a stand selling nuts and candies. A pile of macadamia nuts caught my eye, but they were not unshelled and so there was no way I was going to purchase any. However, the young vendor picked one up. Closer inspection revealed a thin cut (kerf) made by a thin blade.
Using a tool placed the kerf and twisting, the shell broke apart. The nut meat popped out of the shell. The nut meat was flavored with a salty sweet taste as it appears that these nuts were roasted after the nuts were cut. Well, I was sold and bought a couple of pounds. The vendor gave me two metal tools that looked like wide guitar picks that are used to open the nuts almost effortlessly. This would have been better if out guide stayed with us so he could tell us just what we were looking at some of the stands. Saw some beard or pastry of some kind being prepared that smelled delicious, but I had no idea what it was, so I had to pass. None of the vendors spoke English, so many items looked interesting. Might have taken a chance if I knew what the item was or what might be a fair price. A guide would have been helpful on this part of the tour.
We all went back to the boat for the trip back up the canal to our bus. The attraction was it.
We had about 45 minutes to explore this street but it would have been nice if we had more time and of course, someone to walk us around.

“Awesome!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 6, 2013

We absolutely loved this! It's very neat, and a must see if you have more than one day in Shanghai. It reminded me more of Amsterdam than Venice, and it is quite impressive. Bring a camera for some great views and people watching.
