“Nice Old Chinese Street”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 27, 2013

It's quite evidently a traditional style (old fashioned) Chinese street with lots of traditional Chinese architecture. A good place to stroll in the evening hours when the lanterns will come alive adding an extra charisma to the place. Loads of shops selling toys, apparels and souvenirs. I couldn't find any shop which approves much of negotiation.

If you are travelling to Shanghai, you shall get all the stuff that you see here at much lower cost (if you negotiate well and and has time to buy at Nanjing street). The boat trip through the Canal is good if you could take it before 6pm. Otherwise you can hardly see anything as the lights are only towards and boarding location. Afterwards, it's all a dark and gloomy alley.

“Two different experiences”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 21, 2013

Go south from the bridge and you can stroll among interesting shops and restaurants, beautiful decor, some street performances and fireworks at night. Go north from the bridge during the day and get your camera out, because you'll be in the middle of a long lane of fascinating market stalls selling everything from live fish to clothing, traditional medicine, well, everything you can imagine.

“I could take it or leave it”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 12, 2013

This street is really nice for the first kilometer or so. It's new, it's clean, it's renovated, there are plenty of people walking around, the canal is clean and pretty. Once you leave this nice spot, if you keep walking, you reach a really scummy part of town. It continues like this for quite some time.

We went at night (like 6:30pm, it was already dark out) and all the shops were closing. So maybe it's better when the sun is still up.

Also, we didn't take a boat or pay any tickets for scenic spots... So I don't know if that would have opened up nicer places.

“Must see”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 16, 2013

Very nice, real old style Chinese street with a canal. Lots of cafes on both sides of canal, very very crowded though, long queue for canal boat trip. A must visit place in Suzhou.

“a must see........”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 21, 2013

Very real and not for the faint hearted.
The canal trip was interesting, it was winter time so it looked drab and grey and misty with amazing splashes of color from peoples laundry hanging outside!
The farmers market is real, raw, dirty, with ALL kinds of raw meat on the stalls, to stacks of chickens in crates, to roasted nuts and sacks of grains. It's great people watching. Definitely a highlight of our week.
