“Worth travelling halfway round the world”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2013

We managed to visit 8 gaedens. The Humble Administator's, Lion Grove, Master of the Nets, Lingering Garen, Surging Wave Pavilion, Couple's Retreat, Garden of Harmony (On Yuan) and Ting Ling. The fist four are on coach party tours and it is best to try and be there at 7.30 when they open before the hordes arrive. The latter four are much calmer. We could not find the way in the The Mountaining View Embracing Beauty Garden evn though we walked along the outside of its wall for a distance and got lots of (conflicting) directions from locals. We were not let into the Haiyan Garden and I am not sure whether that was because it is not open to the public or it was just closed that day (we could see explanatory posters as at other gqardens, looking through the gate. It was slightly early in the year , blossom was just starting, magnolia, chery andcamellia but it was too early for Peonies. Indeed the gardens were at low season price until 15/4. I have never been anywhere with so many majorly important gardens so close to each other. It was like a yellow book day every day. Worth travelling for.

“Don't miss out”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 19, 2013

These were a marvelous experience, and each one is different. My favorite overall was Humble Administrator's Garden, though Lion Forest Garden was also outstanding because of its Taihu rock. Flowers were all in bloom (mid-April.)

Very much worth the effort and the cost. Recommend visiting during the week and arriving when they first open in the morning so that you encounter less of the noisy tour groups.

“Well Worth It”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 13, 2013

The Gardens of Suzhou are one of the finest attractions in all of China. These gardens are havens of peaceful respite. You can take a relaxing stroll or simply sit to meditate in a serene ambiance unmatched anywhere. For those who appreciate it, the artistic merit of the gardens is also noteworthy. It is well worth the effort to get here if you are already in Shanghai.

“They are not what westerners expect a garden to be”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 10, 2013

Suzhou gardens are mostly small ponds surrounded by strangely shaped rocks from Taihu Lake. Don't expect flowers and grass. But one or two are enough to see and the buildings are usually interesting. Some have a tea house which can be fun to hang out in for a while.

“Great garden with poetry ambience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

I like the creativity of name used to label the pond, rooms and the pavilion in the garden. We visited during summer, hence the pond was filled with lotus and water lily. Various rocks with interesting looks, mimicking people, landscape and animal were display. One most memorable rock was the one display at the center of the room which could sound like a bell when knocked with coins
