Just finished a weekend escape at this hotel with my wife and 1-year old. We wanted to get out of Shanghai for 2 nights, RnR at a luxury property. Booked a suite for 2 nights via the hotel's website online.
Here's the feedback from our very mixed experience.
Check-in was efficient, we were upgraded to a larger Suite due to high occupancy (event) at the hotel. Disappointed to find they had not placed a crib for the baby in our room upon arrival.
When prompted, the hotel staff offered the promised kid's perks like free milk in the evening, but otherwise we might as well have been traveling without a 1 year old child. Not much evidence of the famous kids program, or staff in the kid's area, but anyway our child is too young.
Our Diplomatic Suite (155 sq m) was massive, more than we bargained for and the bedroom/bathroom was very nicely decorated, but the seating room was very so-lala. Much of the furniture was chipped and the cupboards were not closing properly. Seemed like most of the cabinets and tables were placed there to fill space. Almost no decoration in the sitting room. For the Kempinski, I would have expected a iPhone dock or a proper coffee machine instead of the nescafe sachets, but that wasn't promised when I booked. However, when booking online, the website promises free Mini-Bar, but this is in fact not the case. All for additional charge. The kitchenette was TOTALLY useless. No fridge or microwave, much less any plates or cutlery -- all of which are usually handy when preparing food for a 1-year old. I can forgive this, but there is no store or convenience shop on site... so you need to bring all your own food, diapers and supplies for baby. Seems like the hotel, despite being 5 years old, never got fully fitted out with the retail outlets.
Hotel facilities were ok, but need to be maintained. The pool area is fabulous, but we were disappointed that all the kiddie play areas/wading pool were closed outside, maybe because it was threatening to rain. Also, bring swim caps or they will kick you out of the pool. The hotel is not wheelchair (or stroller) friendly, as we need to lift many times to exit to the grounds or the pool area. Lots of unused doors and areas around the hotel, which conveniently use sandbags to show that the door is not in use (very premium.) Also, lots of shabbily kept buildings and sites on the otherwise nice grounds. See pictures. Was a bit disappointed to find that our non-smoking room was equipped with ashtray and matches, but there was no smell. Rooms are not well insulated, and we got to listen to our neighbors watch scary movies on TV from 10pm until 1am.
Generally, we really appreciated the helpfulness of the staff... but there seemed to be too few of the staff particularly servers on duty. We had a problem with our return transport, and the concierge did a great job helping us book a replacement.... but it was an expensive weekend.
We like room service, and the food and restaurant selection in the hotel was generally good. But the second night we ordered room service, it came 45 minutes later than promised and one of the dishes was cold. Limited space in the heater for the 3rd plate? We used the executive lounge for breakfast, because they warned us about huge crowds in the main restaurant due to the conference. It was only ok and very basic for food, but the view was nice.
In all, it was an ok holiday -- and we did get an extra large room -- but for the 2000 RMB ++ per night we sure didn't get the luxury feeling that we expected from a Kempinski. I'm quite disappointed in the value for money at this hotel.
