“Good atmosphere but dirty”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 29, 2012

I stayed @ the Pathfinder International Youth Hostel June 2012. There were a lot of activities going on: movie premières, they were painting the bar, etc. Staff is very friendly and they speak English. During my visited, the cleanliness of the room and shared bathroom was very poor. I think the staff focusses too much on the hipness of the place and forgot about the quality. Food quality was also poor.

They have a great outdoor garden terrace. The inside bar/restaurant area is also very nice, with a separate TV room to watch sports games, etc.

We (1 couple + 1 friend) spent a couple of days at this hostel before moving to a hotel next door. We were traveling in China for a month staying at similar places but this was by far the worst experience. I want to point out that neither of us are picky and we have slept in all kinds of places but this just wasn't okay.

Positive:
+ excellent coffee
+laundry facilities
+ nice enough staff that spoke english
+ comfy bed

Negative:
- We booked a cheaper room for 2 people but when we arrived we had to pay for a more expensive room.
- It says that they have 24 h hot water, however there was no hot water between 2pm and 6 pm (this is not a problem if you know in advance)
- Wifi didn't work in our room which was apparently "too far away" from the router
- we had a private bath and had to shower on top of the squat toilet (didn't check the common showers maybe they were better)
- the floor in our room was very dirty, I made the mistake of walking barefoot from the bathroom to the bed (2m) and my feet were black (seriously)
- the bathroom was not clean either and there was a very old and dark toilet brush laying on the floor.
- we had to empty the trash can in the bathroom oursleves
- the windows had no isolation so it must be freezing in winter
- there is a dog next door that howled all night so we couldn't sleep (this is of course not the hostel's fault but it might be good to know).
- they say they book tickets but that does not seem to include long-distance trains and buses

At the end we moved to a hotel in a building almost next door, for the same price we got a excellent room.

All in all, if this hostel were cheaper it might do for a night or two but for the amount of money they want for a double room you might as well get a hotel.
I want to underline that I am not picky and I can sleep anywhere as long as it is clean and the bed is okay. But please look into other options, I am sure there are several in Wuhan. Checking into a chinese hotel is not difficult if you have a phrasebook.

We stayed here for 3 nights. In that time they ran out of rice and dumplings so not very good really. Wuhan was a nice place. The hostel was also very hard to find as it was in a college campus. People seem to spend alot of time in the rooms and not in the comunal areas so when you want to sleep it can be hard. It would be ok as a stop over but not amazing for much more.

As far as lodging on a budget in Wuhan goes, this is probably the best choice for backpackers or students waiting to sign up at the university (like myself). For a Chinese hostel, the staff is really attentive and friendly, far more so than in some business hotels I have been to. You can also be sure to meet some interesting people around here to share stories and tips about where to go in Wuhan (really important in this city!) with.

The rooms are decent, although I have a major gripe with them using asian-style squat toilets which are essentially placed below the shower in the double-rooms. The public showers are perfectly fine and clean though and accessible through a nice little yard in the back.
Some of the double rooms have a bit of a moist smell to them, although they are otherwise very clean.

All in all, if you want to stay in Wuhan without checking into the Shangri-La or another major hotel and are traveling on a budget, give the Pathfinder Hostel a try.

Pathfinder was decent enough, as hostels go. Their food was pretty good, although a bit on the expensive side. The wifi internet worked okay during the day, but as soon as 5:00 PM rolled around it began to get reeeeeally slow for some reason. That got annoying. The location okay because there was a bus stop quite nearby. There was also a supermarket and a few little dumpling shops down the big road that were good. The staff were all nice people and the atmosphere was usually pretty lively in the lobby area. The lobby in the back of the building was good for a bit quieter atmosphere. There was also a hostel cat that was cute when she was around (she was usually hiding somewhere sleeping though).

The Pathfinder youth hostel may not have the best location (a bit far from city center and train/bus terminals), but sits along a nice road and within walking distance to some good restaurants. The rooms were very nice, especially the famnily room, which actually has two adjunct rooms connected into a single suite-like room. The place has two very large common areas to hang out in and a good restaurant. The owners are especially nice, friendly and helpful and the staff seems to absorb that quality as well.

Excellent service here, and they do make a good cup of coffee. Artsy vibe, many students from the art center seem to hang out here. I'd like the place more if the rooms were more comfortable. We had one of the private rooms. It felt like we were camping outside, the room was sooooo cold even with the heater on full blast. The heater/A/C unit is placed high up near the ceiling and by the window, so all the heat dissipates before you can feel it. We left it on all day and the room never got warm. The unit was so completely inefficient that I was wearing 2 coats on in the room and still shivering. Showering was so painful that I only showered once in the 2 nights. And the common areas were even worse! The hallways are open air. So all the rooms are sandwiched between the freezing outdoors and the freezing indoors. And it gets cold here, it was down at freezing every night. Oh the loo is hilarious, it's a squatter and the shower head is right above it with no room to stand so you basically have to straddle the squatter to take a shower--don't slip! LOL. Definitely a roughing it kind of experience but the caliber of service and the overall funky-friendliness of the place made up for it.
