“A real disappointment for such a great brand.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed December 28, 2013 via mobile

This hotel is a great hotel if you take into account the location. The rooms are reasonable, but are in need of an upgrade at some point. The majority off the hotel staff are excellent and extremely friendly.
The restaurants are limited and the only one I would recommend is the western restaurant only. The Chinese Restaurant used way too much oil. They have a ice bar and ice restaurant that they use during the ice festival in the winter. It was made quite nicely and all around it was a fabulous addition to the hotel.
I would have given this hotel 5 stars without any hesitation as I believe in the brand, I like the brand. But having said that, my wife and I observed a very uncomfortable treatment of a Chinese guest in the Horizon Lounge on the 15th floor during breakfast. I am not Chinese. I am an American Citizen. This act of cruelty to the guest by the hotel staff was unacceptable in many ways. This scene created by 1 or 2 hotel staff ended up having them call Security to confront a guest who paid extra money to be on the Horizon Lounge level, who simply came to breakfast in slippers. And the hotel claimed it was not in their policy to allow guests to wear slippers. First off, I have never heard of this in any 5 star hotel that I have visited in China. Secondly, he is a paying guest. You do not call security over slippers. If this had never happened the hotel would get a 5 star no problem. The hotel Reservations manager tried his best to reassure us this was not acceptable to him personally and I believe him. I am still very upset by the incident. I feel for the Chinese guest who was trying to enjoy his breakfast on Christmas Eve. Harbin is a lovely city and one should go to experience it. This hotel is a great hotel under most conditions. I trust the staff have corrected their behavior for future guests.

We booked the ice palace restaurant for the steamboat dinner but find that the spread is not as wide as we hope. You are really paying for the experience of eating steaming hot steamboat surrounded by -11 deg C ice blocks. We also had some shots of vodka at the ice bar next to it while waiting for our dinner to commence.

Attentive staff, friendly and polite, I will come back again. It's not too near to the 中央大街,so it's not difficult to get a taxi after dinning and shopping in the central area. When we were departing, the staff offered us to take photo at the ice palace even thought it's not yet open before 11am, we were so thankful for such an experience!

The service at this hotel is excellent from check-in and though out the stay. About mid-December, they are suppose to have the Ice house built outdoors which you can have hotpot. I arrived a couple of weeks too early for that but want to check it out next time. There is suppose to be an ice bar also, probably built at the same time after the river completely freezes over.
The hotel rooms are small and the interior needs updating. Its clean but just compared to other 5 stars hotels in China, it feels very outdated.

Room Tip: Get one facing the river.

Hotel is a bit dated but still maintain at a reasonably good standard.

Just loved the customer facing staff in shang palace, patience, attentive and extremely accommodating. Just make you felt like staying longer especially in winter.

Even though there are newer hotels, this is still may choice when im in harbin.

The room I stayed at can see the riverside park, which is beautiful. Unlike most of Chinese hotels, they used L'Occitane bath kit which is the same as Four Seasons. The breakfast is very good and have many Chinese dishes.

This hotel is definitely an experience although Harbin is not the prettiest city I've been to. The very well managed Spa area is my personal favourite. The team in Horizon Club lounge was supportive and managed all my transportation requests during my stay.
