This hotel is a great hotel if you take into account the location. The rooms are reasonable, but are in need of an upgrade at some point. The majority off the hotel staff are excellent and extremely friendly.
The restaurants are limited and the only one I would recommend is the western restaurant only. The Chinese Restaurant used way too much oil. They have a ice bar and ice restaurant that they use during the ice festival in the winter. It was made quite nicely and all around it was a fabulous addition to the hotel.
I would have given this hotel 5 stars without any hesitation as I believe in the brand, I like the brand. But having said that, my wife and I observed a very uncomfortable treatment of a Chinese guest in the Horizon Lounge on the 15th floor during breakfast. I am not Chinese. I am an American Citizen. This act of cruelty to the guest by the hotel staff was unacceptable in many ways. This scene created by 1 or 2 hotel staff ended up having them call Security to confront a guest who paid extra money to be on the Horizon Lounge level, who simply came to breakfast in slippers. And the hotel claimed it was not in their policy to allow guests to wear slippers. First off, I have never heard of this in any 5 star hotel that I have visited in China. Secondly, he is a paying guest. You do not call security over slippers. If this had never happened the hotel would get a 5 star no problem. The hotel Reservations manager tried his best to reassure us this was not acceptable to him personally and I believe him. I am still very upset by the incident. I feel for the Chinese guest who was trying to enjoy his breakfast on Christmas Eve. Harbin is a lovely city and one should go to experience it. This hotel is a great hotel under most conditions. I trust the staff have corrected their behavior for future guests.
