“Great Value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 6, 2008

Overall, my 4 day, 3 night stay was really enjoyable. We had a twin "garden view" room but were upgraded to Ocean View. Given that the hotel is located just off the white, powdery beach it was brilliant. Am in the restaurant industry myself , travelling with a chef, and was pleasantly surprised by hotel's food - expected inedible dishes but they did simple things quite well. Prices were expensive for Sanya, but about average for nice beach resorts in Asia. Hotel was rather full during my stay - their restaurant is not equipped to deal with such high volume. Make the effort to go early as it turns into a zoo after 9.30am.

As with most Sanya hotels, English proficiency was poor throughout. Was travelling with two kiwis and they wouldn't have been able to get by without my basic mandarin. The general clientele consisted of abrasive Chinese families and their famous manners (screaming children, loud parents, generally unpleasant company for those used to pristine resort islands like Bali), and a very small propotion of young to middle aged Russians.

The rooms were comfortable and very modern, I am really picky about bathrooms and it was a good one. The cold water only jacuzzi was actually pleasant given my sunburn. Nice plasma TV with cable, comfy couches. Didn't like that our twin room had single beds as opposed to twin ones - that seems to be common in China as a whole though.

Concierge was rather disappointing - didn't expect much to begin with but there were absolutely zero useful suggestions and recommendations of food places. They tended to pack you up to the closest tourist trap even though I spoke mandarin. Definitely look up reviews, addresses and maps online because they are little help, not even stocking maps of the city or knowledgeable about the more well known dining locations in town.

Pool was fantastic. Really comfortable deck chairs and cabanas. Bring a ton of sunblock, the pool itself lacks any shady spots and the sun is brutal.

For fellow foodies, do stop in the following as we had very good experiences, even though we weren't that adventurous and just visited the bigger, more famous restaurants that I'd seen reviews of:

Dongjiao yelin seafood - reviews all say it was very expensive but I found it more than reasonable for its food quality. Beautiful steamed fish. In dadong hai.

Mediterranea - Surprisingly good babaganoush, hummus, pizza and pasta. Had a shisha which was well prepared by the owner himself. Located along the Sanya river.

Grilled food stalls - just out from Aegean, walk left on the beach. There is one particular food stall that has fridges for all its products and barbeques a variety of items to order. It's dingy, but delicious. Chicken and corn on the cob were brilliant.

Dumpling House - Located inside the mall connected to Crowne Plaza (2 minutes cab ride from Aegean). Their pan fried Chicken and Mushroom dumplings and the pork and chive steamed dumplings were really tasty. Packed the leftovers and microwaved them at the hotel the next day for a really satisfying snack.

My husband and I had a very enjoyable 3 night stay at this new resort hotel. We secured some good off-season rates from an on-line Sanya travel agent.

Although we booked a mountain view room, we were given a ground floor room adjacent to one of the three pools - hardly anyone used this pool, so it was nice and private. ( a mountain view room may have looked on to the road).

We agree with all the positive comments by travelsnob1. The jetty did not cause us a problem, the water was hot enough, and while the internet was a little slow, it was free of charge. We also welcomed the clothes washer that was provided in the room, however we were surprised to see that there was no iron supplied.

The decor, fittings and finishes in the room and in the hotel were all first class.

We only had breakfast and one buffet dinner at the hotel - both were very good. The breakfast buffet offered a good mix of Asian and Western food. The only problem we found with the restaurant was that the air-conditioning was not coping with the hot weather and also doors opened to the outside which would not have helped.

If you are looking for a relaxing beachside holiday, then this resort at Yalong Bay is the place to go. Just remember to take the sunscreen and umbrella during the summer season.

MY TRAVEL STYLE: If possible, I try to stay away from business and strongly prefer resorts that resemble the Four Seasons, Aman, and Oberoi but try to find similar properties at lower cost. I seek out the “wow” experiences and I encourage you to view hotels I have stayed at and their respective reviews (by clicking on my name).

LOCATION: Very good. Hotel is directly on the beach and away from the main entrance where most beach visitors enter. The only slight downside to the location is that there is a long ugly jetty when looking to the left. Not a huge deal but it would have been nicer without. Able to walk to restaurants (next to crown plaza hotel) in about 20-25 minutes (or a 3 minute taxi for 5 Yuan).

BEST WAY TO GET THERE: We took a taxi for about 40 minutes for 80 Yuan from Sanya Bay

TYPE OF ROOM: Ocean View. All rooms are suites.

BED/SHEETS/PILLOW: Bed is soft (unusual in China) with very good bed linens and excellent pillows and comforter.

LIGHTING: Tons of lighting in bedroom, kitchen, living area, and bathroom.

BATHROOM/SHOWER: Gorgeous. Stone everywhere. Rain shower and hand held. Water pressure less than medium but not weak. Would have preferred more. Water typically didn’t get too hot, but was fine for a shower but a real disappointment for the Jacuzzi tub on the balcony.

TOILETRIES: Great! Spa quality, you can leave yours at home.

CLEANLINESS: The entire room and hotel is very clean. And it’s only 3 months new.

A/C: Quickly and quietly would get the room clean.

CLOSET SPACE: Laughable. Such a huge room and one of the tiniest closets in a hotel I have ever seen.

STYLE OF ROOM: Gorgeous. Stone travertine-ish flooring. Living room area (not a separate room, but in front of the bed. Good sized kitchen & there is a Jacuzzi on the balcony which are both standard in all rooms (since this is an all suites hotel). There is also a washer/dryer provided in the room.

QUIET/MORNING LIGHT: We never heard any noise from other guests. The morning sunlight can be blocked with the curtains.

FOOD: Some really good and some not so good. Very mixed. The burger on the pool menu is quite good. Drinks by the pool are a very expensive US$4.00, but who can complain when you can bring your complementary sodas from your minibar to the pool. Breakfast is mostly Asian, with a choice of a few cereals, eggs, yoghurts, and breads. No pancakes, waffles here. There is a 2:1 happy hour but only in the lobby bar from 6PM to 7PM. Mini bar provides cokes, sprites, and waters at no charge, refilled daily. Very few other items to eat in the mini bar and the room service menu is sparse.

TV/INTERNET: Flat screen TV is huge, one of the biggest seen in a hotel. Many English channels and movie channels. The TV is somewhat blocked by the couch when watching in bed. The internet is very slow (seems to be in all of Sanya) and available at no charge. A computer is in the room for the internet.

SERVICE: Staff is very friendly and definitely better than most hotels in China, but still below a similar level western hotel.

COMMON AREA: Excellent pool and loungers over looking the ocean. There were plenty of loungers available but that may be because there are few guests. I don’t know if this hotel is full if there would be enough loungers for everyone and there are only about 10 on the beach itself (the loungers, not the beach is private for guests only). The restaurant is fine, but 95% of the seating is indoors and one day we struggled a bit to find an open table. Pool is warm and perfect. Couldn’t tell the size of the pool from the website, but it is huge and there are several. One HUGE disappointment is that the umbrellas let some sun though so after 2 days here and spending nearly ALL of our time under the pool umbrellas, we were fried (and this is after 5 days at a different resort in which we didn’t burn at all). The hotel is very well represented in every other way from the pictures provided on the website. Dislike that there is no bathroom by the beach. The lobby, restaurant, pool, and beach share the same bathroom which is indoors.

ROOM & CITY TIPS: Higher rooms have better views. Many hotels that have wood loungers on the beach have no cushions so if you don’t stay here, be careful about that. Lower level rooms would not be preferred since there is no privacy on the balcony for your Jacuzzi. I would assume that many ocean view rooms here are more like partial ocean views due to palm trees throughout the pool area.. This hotel has got to be the best in all of Yalong Bay. They are going to have some stiff competition with 3-4 major players opening up this month (April); Mandarin Oriental, Pullman, Ritz Carlton, and Banyan Tree. This hotel is truly incredible and if you are ok with the two main problems (sun shining through the umbrellas & lack of hot water) then I absolutely recommend staying here.

  • Liked — View of sea from common area, rooms, pool, kitchen, etc.
  • Disliked — Not enough hot water & umbrellas dont block the sun
