Chicago Suites is a bit of an odd duck which grows on you. The hotel was quite stylish maybe ten years ago and has some very nice aspects though it is getting a little down at the heels, if not yet exactly seedy. They do maintain it quite well, there's just been some wear and tear.
My business partner and I like to stay in two bedroom suites or serviced apartments when we travel and picked the Chicago Suites for that reason. This hotel is a little funkier than the places we usually stay but I quite liked it except for a few things.
One is that the internet connection in the hotel is very slow. This would be a minor problem except that if you're trying to do business, keep in touch with the office, contact your local clients and maybe do some research, you're going to be very frustrated. We had to go down to the lobby in order to get any work done.
I would also caution travelers that most of the lovely thoughtful things that they have left in your room, such as playing cards, bottles of Evian, noodles, fancy teas, sodas and that snazzy collection of shampoos and conditioner have price tags on them. They also provide the more usual unfancy shampoo, regular tea and non-designer bottled water, you just need to be mindful of which one you are picking up or you may run up a pretty good tab.
As has been mentioned, the hotel can be a little hard to locate the first time. Your taxi driver will not know where it is and will not speak English, so it is imperative that you bring with you the address in Chinese characters or at least the phone number. On our first try we asked a security guard if he knew where the hotel was and he didn't, even though it was literally across the street from his post and 30 stories high. This is probably because, although the hotel does have a large sign, it is mostly blocked from view by an even larger tree. In a pinch, it may come in handy to know that it is near the Science Museum metro station.
It is located in a lively neighborhood which will be able to provide anything you might need (including a Wal-Mart) and is just a few blocks from the HuaQiangBei electronics market, which is probably why you're there in the first place. There is no restaurant in the hotel but there is a very inexpensive Chinese chain restaurant on the first floor that I also grew to like quite a bit.
