Stayed at the Panglin twice on a recent business trip to China. The first stay was for 3 nights (room 1211), the second stay was for two nights (room 1305). Both times requested King Non Smoking rooms and had no problems at all.
Ate at the buffet on the 56/F one night. They had a 'Taste of Canada" promotion. Being Canadian I thought it was my duty to attend. It is amazing (and cute) what the Chinese consider to be Canadian. I had never seen or heard of most of the dishes on the menu, but there was good variety on the buffet, and the meal was good. They featured Inniskilin Ice Wine which was a nice touch.
Had the Breakfast Buffet all 5 days and it was excellent. They have an Omelette station where the chef creates whatever you want, and they have a good selection and variety of other foods.
Broadband access is free and it is remarkable fast for China.
A colleague of mine was staying at the Shangri La. I would say the ambiance (Lobby, Lobby Bar) is better at the Shangri La, but the rooms are definately newer and cleaner at the Panglin. Having said this, the rooms were a bit more dated than when I stayed at the hotel in May. Although this does not surprise me given how dirty Shenzhen is.
I worked out at the gym on 3 occasions, and they have a good selection of equipment, two treadmills and an outdoor pool.
When the hotel opened, they were managed by Hilton. I believe they are now afflilated with Summit Hotels. This should be good to ensure proper upkeep of the hotel.
I know Starwood is opening two hotels in 2007 that look amazing, one is across from the convention centre. This competition should keep the Panglin on their toes, to maintain their service and upkeep of the property.
Will definately stay again on my next trip to China in November.
PS - Excellent Fusion restaurant in the Shopping Mall accross the street. Restaurant is called MADE IN KITCHEN. Hong Kong Catering Company manages the restaurant. Excellent Sushi/Sashimi, Chinese Food and Australian Steaks were fabulous.
