“Decent”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 week ago

Overall, the ambience and the room - beds were good. There are 3-4 English speaking staff that were very helpful. The dinner service was not bad. The breakfast could be better.

The hotel is 5 minutes walk from the metro station (University Town).

I stayed here for a few nights for business in the University Town area. Note that Vienna Hotel is a hotel chain; this particular branch is known as the "University Town" branch. Overall, this is a basic, average hotel. A list of pros and cons is below:

PROS:
1) Location - the location is quite good, especially if you have business in, or are more generally visiting, the University Town area. It is approximately a 10-15 minute walk to the University Town metro station; once you get on the metro, it is easy to get around Shenzhen. Please note though that the surrounding neighborhood is very local, with small, local restaurants which cater mostly to the surrounding residents (in other words, there are no international chains or international restaurants around the hotel -- if you want to be in a more "international" and expat-friendly area, this is probably not the best location for you). There are numerous convenience stores within walking distance from the hotel, and there is also a supermarket near the University Town subway station.
2) Front Desk Staff - the front desk staff were courteous and were quick to greet and welcome guests. I spoke Chinese with the front desk staff, so I cannot comment on their English ability.
3) Room/bathroom cleanliness - the room was generally clean, although the carpet was showing its age (there are complimentary slippers provided in the room, so I would recommend wearing them). The bathroom was clean as well. Toiletries are provided (toothbrush+toothpaste, comb, shower hat, and a body soap dispenser and shampoo dispenser in the shower). Bottled water is also provided (as is an electric kettle for boiling water), and the bottled water is replaced daily.
4) Room computer - the room I stayed in also had a desktop computer on the desk for guest use. This computer used a wired internet connection, which was faster and more reliable than the wireless internet provided.

CONS:
1) Breakfast - my room came with breakfast, which is provided buffet-style in the hotel restaurant on the 1/F (if your room rate does not come with breakfast included, you can also pay for breakfast at the restaurant). The breakfast buffet included mostly Chinese options. However, it was not good -- dishes seemed quite stale in the buffet trays, and nothing was really hot temperature-wise (everything seemed just kind of lukewarm / room temperature - i.e., it seemed that foods were not being held in the buffet trays at proper temperatures). I would not recommend eating breakfast in the hotel -- you'd probably be better off getting some packaged pastries at the convenience stores around the hotel.
2) Wireless internet - the wireless internet was not very reliable, and the connection often dropped, which necessitated re-connecting during the course of usage.
3) Soundproofing (the hallways/corridors and windows) - soundproofing was not very good with respect to the hallways/corridors and windows -- when inside the room, you could hear people talking in the hallways/corridors of your floor. I was on one of the top floors of the hotel, and I could still hear sounds (e.g., vehicle horns) from the window. When checking-in, I would recommend requesting a quieter room (e.g., a room on one of the top floors and not facing the main road).

The hotel is actually generally referred to as the Vienna Hotel Shenzhen University Town. It is convenient if you are visiting the Shenzhen University Town (consisting of Peking University, Tsinghua University and Harbin Institute of Technology). It is also a 5 minute walk from the University Town metro station and so easily connecting to much of the rest of Shenzhen. It is basically a clean hotel - though I did discover a cockroach in the room. Bathroom and bed were very clean. No bar fridge in rooms. Only very little English is spoken. Staff are generally pleasant, though some seem dismissive if they don't speak English and you don't understand Chinese. Quite inexpensive. A no-nonsense Chinese breakfast is an additional 20, 30, or 38RMB, depending on how you book. (Seems to be 20RMB if booked through booking.com.)

Room Tip: "Have No Smoke Floor" (so the sign says) are on levels 14 and 15. These rooms tend to have...

Very rude and bad attitude upon our arrival, it makes you not enjoy when stay, I will never go back again. I request the room facing the football playground, she agreed and arrange a room located 4 th floor, but we found the view was block by the hotel banner, the feeling make me very bad for the whole travel.

This hotel is really very lovely. The beds are comfy, the luxurious interior is so inviting. Most of the ammenities that you need are provided. Pity that the bathroom didn't have a bathtub though. And the room didn't have a bar fridge. It would have been perfect if all that was included.
Though the location is not very centralized, it was a lovely stay after all. I had a really relaxing time there. Be sure to try the nutritious soup offered by the restaurant. It's delicious!!
