“Quite disappointed”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 2, 2013 via mobile

We visited Mama Mia on our last trip to Xiamen and had a wonderful meal. So this time we returned with great anticipation of another great Italian meal in the heart of Xiamen. Unfortunately our experience was quite different. All three of us were disappointed in our meals. My seafood risotto offered a generous portion but was quite bland and tasteless with a few prawns and pieces of calamari. My wife had the squid ink pasta which again was a generous portion but was quite disappointing and lacked flavor. Service was average, staff was polite and attentive but language was a bit of a problem, with only the manager appearing to speak English. Haven't decided if our first or second visit was the norm, and will only decide if we return for a third visit when we next come to Xiamen.

“Nice Italian”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 23, 2013

Nice spaghetti carbonara from this place. Nothing special but nice all the same.

Good location and we sat on the veranda out front which was a little cooler than indoors.

Would visit again though.

“Mamma Mia what a disappointment.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed May 10, 2013

The reviews we read promised evening of jazz and good food.....on arrival we were surprised to see restaurant nearly empty..we were greeted by 'trainee staff ' young girl who didn't understand what still water was and went to ask owner what we wanted. The menu was not very interesting and poorly presented.Above and beyond basic pizza and pasta there was little to tempt the appetite .Service slow ,attention poor. How they would cope with a busy restaurant is beyond comprehension. No one came to ask if we would like a dessert so paid the bill and left. When we left restaurant we noticed Italian right next door extremely busy pity we didn't go there !! Interestingly there was a review on here saying that Mamma Mia's attitude was very snobbish but doesn't appear to be on here now......they have obviously lost there way !!

“Hard to find great salads in Asia”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 8, 2013

The food was good, the pizza's good and the salads excellent. So hard to find a good salad in Asia. Very convenient if you are staying at the Marco Polo. Staff speaks excellent English too

“Great Italian Restaurant”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 7, 2013

Been eating here on my visits to Xiamen since 2009. A convenient location directly opposite the Marco Polo Hotel, it's a great place to eat either lunch or a dinner or just chill with a plate of antipasti and a glass (or a bottle!) of wine. All the pasta dishes I have eaten here have been great and Mauro and Chantal are excellent hosts. If you like jazz, this is also a great place to be just to listen to some of the greats that Mauro chooses to play throughout the evening. A great place to relax, and you would believe you are in Italy.
