“Excellent service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 24, 2012

they give you unexpected services: responsive concierge, write you the taxi number when you get in or get out from one, greeting for birthday guest, attentive worker, even the housekeeper will talk to you like a guest specialist... the hotel might not be the newest in town, the coolest design and most comfortable bed etc but their service is excellent! I'm really impress with it and wonder how it works?!

I only stayed at the hotel one night mid trip as our other hotel was full, but previously the hotel was used by the rest of my team during trips and aside for the commute out of town they really like the hotel. I on the other hand was not convinced. The bed was super hard - i'm not a fan of soft mattresses - but this was too much. I ended up trying to get to sleep on the sofa before managing 2 hours wrapped up in the duvet for more comfort. The shower area in the bathroom was quite cramped. Room service was good, but was slightly on the small side. There was a large selection of breakfast but quality wasn't great on certain things.

The hotel and staff were nice, friendly and had a decent grasp of English, but from the way my colleagues talk about the hotel I was expecting something more.

This was our second visit within a year and I enjoyed our stay even more than last time. It really is a comfortable place to stay, service is great and the rooms are good, we stayed in a suite this time and it was lovely. We have traveled here from Shanghai and after the prices in Shanghai we were pleasantly surprised at how affordable this place is.
The foyer and lounge bar is a wonderful place to relax or hold meetings, big comfy couches, and high ceilings with a sweeping staircase, very old school, but classy nonetheless.
My only real criticism is the pervading smell of cigarette smoke on some through the corridors and leading to the club lounge.

Room Tip: get a suite

Have stayed a few times and this is a great choice in Fuzhou.

The lobby area is very clean with high ceilings and an open area to have a drink / chat with friends. The receptionists are friendly, quick and courteous.

Breakfast is very good but not great, plenty of selections but some of the buffet looks a bit tired and some of the bread items are a bit hard.

Rooms are well furnished but starting to feel a bit dated, views from the higher floors are interesting but the best bit is the beds which are absolutely amazingly comfortable - very crisp sheets, great mattress and plenty of room. I have slept very well every time i have stayed.

The rooms suffer from the regular chinese hotel issue of smoky rooms even on non smoking floors. Only once have i accepted the first room that I have been given, on the other occasions I have asked to be moved to a room that doesnt smell - last visit it took 3 moves, but in the end I have always been given a 'clean' room.

And then the bed is just great......

Room Tip: keep asking until you find a genuine non smoking room, even if they claim none are available

Staff do their best to please. While my room and the floor was "non-smoking", according to the front desk, there were no "non-smoking" signs in my room nor on the floor, and there was a distinct odor in the room -- didn't sleep well. But the real find was the Korye Jung Restaurant which offers authentic Korean barbeque at moderate prices in a medium-sized restaurant that’s clean and bright. Their side dishes were “just like mom makes” if your mom is Korean (lived there 5 years). Sauces and spices weren’t modified to match local tastes. Table-top-bbq is clearly an emphasis and portions were appropriately sized, so the pork with lettuce wraps were quite sufficient (sam-kyup-sal). The food and service was so excellent that I went a second night and enjoyed a lighter meal of the kalbitang (beef rib soup). It was dynamite – exactly like that served in Seoul with a rich beef soup base and tender bits of beef that fell off the bone (my sole ding would be it came without the requisite bowl of kimchi that’s always present at any Korean meal). Staff were friendly and well trained; some spoke very passable English – and always with warm, charming smiles.

Room Tip: Check the room first to ensure it's suitable.

The hotel has a slightly old fashioned feel, especially in the lobby bar but for me that is a good thing, it is comfortable and relaxed. The rooms were good without being soectacular, they were clean and comfortable though. The dining options are quite good, and I especially enjoyed the Korean restaurant, although none of the wait staff were able to guide us on food portions, therefore we ordered far too much
The club lounge was a welcoming spot for an afternoon beer or breakfast.
Overall I would come back here again

At around 1000RMB per night, it is difficult to complain about what we received at this hotel. It is not at the same level as some of the other Shangri-La hotels, but all in all we had reasonable service, clean rooms and a pleasant enough stay.
We stayed three nights on this trip and, contrary to some of the other contributors, we found that the hotel restaurants were at best mediocre. In general I got the impression that they are catering to locals and the selection was not what we expected. Arriving late on the first night we decided to eat at the buffet which was probably a mistake - possibly we have been spoiled by the spread at some of the other Shangri-La hotels and this one did not compare, although I must admit the price was very reasonable. Breakfast was also a little dissapointing - they need to step this up.
The rooms were quite old - although clean and reasonably spacious, they have seen far better days. Apparently there are some newer rooms, and next time we will upgrade to Horizon club rooms in the hope that this is better.
In Fuzhou there are not a lot of alternatives, so this is probably the best that you can do.

Room Tip: Possibly the horizon club rooms are better than the regular rooms
