“Bright room, conveniently located”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 3, 2013

I would advise to ask for an upstairs room at the front of the house in your booking. The difference in quality of the Terrasur rooms is huge while the price of all rooms is the same. Initially we got a room downstairs. This was a very hot, dark, small and stuffy room with a window overlooking the small garden and the breakfast room. So no privacy at all. In our booking confirmation it said we booked a bright room, so we asked and got an alternative room upstairs. We got a room at the front of the house, I think it was number 8. This was indeed a very bright room with windows in two walls and twice as big as the one they initially gave us. We were quite pleased with this room. Streetnoise (as indicated by another reviewer) didn't bother us at all.
The hotel is very conveniently located, close to the city centre. There is a big supermarket just two blocks away.

Analyst's Call: avoid Hostel Terrasur. Demasiado Ruido. If you must stay there be sure to bring earplugs.

First the positives:
1.The place is clean, fairly fresh and well kept up
2.The food is not bad, not great, but not bad (standard breakfast fare: bread/cheese/1 scrambled egg/jams/jellies/1 yogurt/coffee/tea/juice
3.The WiFi reaches into the upstairs rooms at good signal strength

negatives:
1. The street in front of TerraSur is heavily traveled and noisy. Avoid a Saturday night stay as foot traffic, late night partiers/revelry and late night vehicle drive-bys may keep you awake.

2. Avoid rooms 7 & 8. While they have a lot of windows that let in the light, the downside is that they both face the street (see above) and allow the noise to enter.

3. The seems to have been constructed of plywood where nails were used sparingly. That is, footsteps, bumps, voices and other noises seems to reverberate through the house. Even activity downstairs seems to easily echo/vibrate to the upstairs. I can only attribute this to plywood that was not nailed down properly. Also it seems that internal insulation was not used either. As a result the house feels like a wood drum/sound chamber at times.

4. Proprietress is apathetic. In short, it seems like the Hostel is first run for the benefit of her friends/family/child care/social network and consideration for those actually staying there (i.e. the paying guests) is an afterthought.

On a Sunday night, the hostess had invited over some friends/family with two adolescent children. The adults were fairly noisy with loud conversation and the children were playing, screaching and bumping/banging into walls. At about 11:00 pm at night we asked the hostess to please be quiet as we were trying to sleep. Things quieted for about 15 minutes and then the noise started up again. At about 12:00 am I asked the hostess if she could please quiet down the "party" as we were trying to sleep. Things quieted down for a few minutes and then the noise and ruckus started back up again. After the second request for a little quiet, I realized the woman wasn't going to quiet the kids (nor the adults) and that things were going to be what they were.

You know when you find yourself in a bad situation and eventually try to find the humor in that situation? Well my realization hit me at 12:30 am on that SUNDAY night: Dios Mio! We were trapped inside a Ruth Goldberg-inspired House of Noise with a merciless Hostess and two little kids that had been seemingly fed methamphetamine-laced coca cola and had the run of the Hostel. Yikes!

The noise continued off and on until 2AM in the morning. Please understand, my wife and I are not high maintenance, picky/fussy people. We are pretty low-key/maintenance and tolerant folks even when it comes to lodging arrangements. For example, we stayed at ErraticRock in Puerto Natales (recommended) with a hostel packed with 20-30 year olds and had a fine experience. I don't usually do tripadvisor reviews, but have written this to spare others the experience we encountered. Put simply, I would never stay at Hostel Terrasur again.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms 7 & 8. While they have a lot of windows that let in the light, the downside is that...

Dear Ted

As Hostal Terra Sur "Warmth in Patagonia" would like to respond to your comments on this website.
First of all we would like to thank the good points that rescues of your stay, in the days of Christmas and New Year's Eve in our establishment.
Second, note that the traffic in Ohiggins street is actually abundant throughout the day, product of the exchange of traffic of the public transportation in the city. After the flood and overflow of the river, that hit the city of Punta Arenas in March 2012, authorities determined the modification of mass transit, the period of time that it will take to replace the bridge that was damaged in the flood, therefore the vehicular noise situation is TEMPORARY.
Third: We are glad to know that, in our mission to deliver warmth and family care, you thought that guests, Argentine couple and their two children, were relatives of ours. At 23:00 hrs, they were returning from a tour day through the city and the kids were a bit restless product of the long day, but we remind you that before midnight they were already in the room.

We are extremely sorry that your experience was not pleasant and also that the last day, your health and febrile status didnt allowed you to fully enjoy our city and our hostel, we appreciate your feedback and will continue to work to improve those necessary aspects to offer the best place to rest and enjoy the city.

Sincerely
Hostal Terra Sur Team

Very cozy hostal. Best breakfast ever. Comfortable room, very clean, good bed & bathroom. Nice common area, nice decoration, staff is very helpful, speak english. Two small concerns: area is not the best, but quiet and not far from the center; atmospher is very calm, quite.

Room Tip: if you are looking for fun and networking better chose another place, but if you need comfort and va...

We stayed in Terrasur on our last night in Patagonia, before flying out of Punta Arenas. The hostel is centrally located, walking distance to many eating options and things to see in the city.

The hostel is basically a house with several rooms and very cozy. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Breakfast included scrambled eggs, toast, cereal and yogurt - very typical Chilean though (cornflake type cereal instead of granola or muslix, white bread, flavoured yogurt, instant coffee, etc.). The staff was so nice that I cared less about the food.

The rooms themselves were very basic - functional and clean but dated (with old bathroom fixtures, dated decor, etc.). With that said, Punta Arenas doesn't strike me as the style / comfort capital of Chile, so this hostal is probably a good option relative to what else is available.

I stayed there for three nights and definitely was not disappointed. Reception is very helpful with regards to any inquiries or questions you may have. I wanted to book a tour to visit Torres del Paine and the reception set it up for me. The tour was amazing. Overall the reception makes you feel at home. The hostel is located pretty much in the middle of Punta Arenas so it's easy to get to the plaza, banks, stores, restaurants, museums, you name it. The rooms are nice and the beds are very comfortable. Best three nights of sleep I've ever had in a hotel or hostel. The breakfast was also very delicious. Overall, my experience at Hostal Terrasur was amazing. If anyone is looking for a place to stay in Punta Arenas, this is the place.
