At my friends' insistance, we went to see the penguins while at Punta Arenas. What else was I going to do I thought. But afterwards, I must say the experience exceeded my expectations. We booked the trip with Comapa for about $60. The trip starts at 5pm, from the dock about 10 minutes of taxi ride away from downtown. The boat ride (which has a small and porbably pricy concession) is a whopping 2 hours each (the "ferry" is actually a very slow and aging transit boat, with the curiously timed departure at 5pm due to some local ferry schedule) with 1 hour on the island. 1 hour may seem quite a bit but after photos and the hike to the top of the island to the lighthouse, 1 hour was barely enough to really savor the experience. However, the island was full of Magellanic penguins, like tens or hundreds of thousands, quaking and walking around. But even with the short time there, I didnt' regret doing this. We made it back to the hotel after 10 pm however.
