“Well worth a visit in any case”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 22, 2013

The history of Iquique is strongly related to Humberstone. You can well imagine how hard life here in the desert was.

Visit also the production site Sta. Laura..

“Interesting”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 22, 2013

This old disbanded ming town, showing how people lived and the different skills that were needed from a time gone by. Nice to see it being restored.Very hot walking around in the middle of the desert take water especially if with children. Toilets are onsite.

“One of the Last Salitreras”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 14, 2013

Humberstone is now a national monument and constantly being restored. It was one of the last of the to be closed - around 1960, I think. If you see this salitrera, you should also see one of the ones which closed much earlier...they give you a graphic picture of what life was like for miners in different eras. The first I saw, I think it was Chacabuco, closed shortly after the WWW I and was practically then the concentration it eventually became under the dictatorship here. Humberstone is no place you'd want to live, but it does have plazas, theatres, schools and shops. Things had definitely gotten better.

“Visiting the past”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2013

Try to visit it early to avoid the sun and heat. Buy and enjoy a mango Milano popsicle at the site shop. Delicious and refreshing! Afterwards go to Pica and Matilla. Great places to get fresh fruit and yummy alfajores!

“Too much remodelling”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 26, 2013

Interesting historical place. But unfortunately, with remodellings.
I prefer and recommend "Salitrera Santa Laura". Both are incuded in tours. Santa Laura has not been "retouched" , it is original 1920´s
