“Home sweet home”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 19, 2014

I have stayed in this hotel more than three months. After reading some of the comments I felt like living a message. Hotel is very clean and staff is very friendly. Food is good from variety of dishes. Same goes for the breakfast. With the new management they will be the best hotel in Douala. If you stay long enough hotel is trying to keep up with Europe's holidays and events which happens to be quite good. A lot of preparation and hard work. if you want to see problems you can always find some. But keep in mind as the locals say when things dont go as planned. "This is Africa". Management is always open to new ideas and always available incase you have any problems.
I would like to thank everyone for their hospitality and friendship. Especially Mr. Gerard, Ms. Alizee and many more I cant remember their names.
Regards

I recently stayed at this hotel on business. It is right in the heart of Douala, however, I did not leave the hotel on my own due to safety concerns.

My room was fine. It was reasonably clean, however a little dated. The food at the hotel is quite good, however, service is extremely slow. If you plan to eat, give yourself lots of time as it may take 40-60+ minutes to get your food and drink.

Also, if sitting outside by the pool at night, be sure to wear bug spray!

Dear LaurenAsh1,

I would like to thank you for taking the time to post a comment on your stay at our hotel on Trip Advisor.

We do take your comments very seriously and have addressed the slowness in the service of food & beverages with the staff concerned. Equally we have started fumigating the pool and garden area at regular intervals to avoid being overwhelmed by mosies although this is really a seasonal issue.

Our staff all look forward to welcome you back at Hotel Akwa Palace for your next visit in Douala.

Warm regards,
Gérard Schraven

We went here for a company get together one afternoon by the pool and have to say the service is the worst i have ever experienced in Douala, i ended up going to the bar 8 times to remind the staff that we required drinks. We finally got some drinks 40 minutes later, we then had to continually go back to remind the staff we wanted further drinks. The management did not seem to bother and felt they were doing OK. DO NOT STAY HERE, there are far better places to go in Douala for refreshments, i am so glad we never use this hotel to stay in as i am sure you would die of hunger if thr drinks service was anything to go by.

Room Tip: Do not stay here.....

Dear Client,

Thank you for taking your valuable time to post your comment on your previous visit to our Hotel Akwa Palace on Trip Advisor.

Needless to say we are terribly sorry for the poor service you have experienced around our pool. This is obviously not standard practice in our hotel where our staff are trained to ensure that our guests receive nothing but the best, both in terms of service and food. Your comment was shared amongst our food & beverage staff who have appreciated your feedback as it can only help us improve.

We thank you once more for having made us aware of the quality of your stay and do hope that you will come and stay with us during your next visit and give us a chance to look after you well.

Yours sincerely,

This hotel was in heart of the city , only problem here is parking as it was in the city. They have very nice pool. Food also very good here. If you are traveling for business this is the right place. They have nice and big lobby for your business discussions.
The best part here is seating facility around the swimming pool to drink and eat.

The hotel itself is a good one, the rooms were dated but still comfortable enough and clean enough. The hallways were really smelly but once in the room it was gone. They have a nice pool and a nice pool bar, with friendly staff. Breakfast very good!
Wifi in the public areas sucked at night when everyone was using it, but hey it's Cameroon, so what can you expect.
I wouldn't mind staying there again.

Dear Jeannette V.

Many thanks for taking your valuable time to leave your comment on Trip Advisor!

They have been shared aith our members of staff who will ensure that your next stay with us is faultless. Our housekeeping staff strive to keep the hotel rooms clean and fresh at all times. Unfortunately the corridor on your floor might have been overlooked. The Wifi in the public areas of the hotel can indeed slow down when many of our guests are connected at the same time. We are looking into increasing the bandwidth to alleviate this problem.

We are happy that you have enjoyed our full buffet breakfast which indeed offers a great variety of dishes.

We very much look forward to welcoming you back to Hotel Akwa Palace in teh near future.

Yours sincerely,

Gerard Schraven

"Well, our problem has returned and we need to dump fuel and head back to Douala" said the pilot on night-time Air France flight from Douala to Paris. That freaked me out a bit. I was on my way back to the States from Malabo, EG and was ready to get home. I had no visa for Cameroon - and getting dumped into a third-world airport in the middle of the night wasn't my idea of a fun time. Air France didn't help much - they provided very little information about what our next steps would be. But after a bit of chaos in baggage claim, I signed onto a voucher with three Brits and we all piled into an over-stuffed bus that took us to the Akwa Palace in downtown Douala.

It was obvious from the outside that this place was much nicer than the flea-infested version in my worst-case scenario mental state. The staff was friendly and checked us all in very quickly. Rooms were clean and spacious. WiFi was glacial in the rooms, but decent in the lobby.

In the morning, I found my way to the restaurant for breakfast which was very nice. Food was great. Many professional people - not all guests of the hotel - were there as well. The hotel has a really nice pool and pool-side bar/restaurant. Later on during the day I had lunch in the pool-side bar - lamb with fries - which was terrific. The gift shop was loaded with dusty, vastly overpriced junk... no reason to buy anything there. I wasn't brave enough to venture too far out into the city, but there isn't a lot around this hotel. Others who know Douala better may have a different opinion - but I erred towards the side of caution, not knowing when we'd be called on to head back to the airport.

All in all, my experience was positive. The manager was super friendly and very interested in improvement ideas. Apparently the rooms are being updated - that will be helpful. The public spaces could be brought up to date as well. In any case, while you may be able to do better in Douala than the Akwa Palace, I was grateful to have had the experience of staying there.

Room Tip: Street-side rooms will be noisy - Doualans have discovered the horn and use it copiously.

Dear Brian,

We thank you very much for the positive feedback you have posted on your recent stay at Hotel Akwa Palace on Trip Advisor. We have indeed passed on your comments to our members of staff at the Reception as well as to our restaurant and Kitchen staff. We have certainly made note of your comment on the Gift Shop which is a rented space in our property and have shared it with the tenant in order to bring in some improvements on the display and variety of items.

I have the pleasure to confirm that the hotel is indeed about to undergo a soft reburbishment programme starting early 2014.

We are conveniently located in the central business district of Douala close to shops, banks and the cultural centre. It is very safe to venture out in the streets during the day but not so advisable on your own at night.

We look forward to welcoming you back in a not too distant future.

Yours sincerely,
Gerard Schraven
