“Great value hotel in between Pub Street and Angkor”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 12, 2014

LOCATION - Located on the road to Angkor Wat, Tara Angkor is about a kilometre away from Pub Street. If the weather is pleasant, it's a nice walk. If not, it's a $2 tuktuk ride one-way. It's around 6km away from the airport, not a problem since they have complimentary airport transfers included in their packages. The hotel itself is located in the quiet part of Siem Reap. There are a few establishments around but mostly cater to package tour groups, who come by bus. We arrived almost midnight and the surrounding establishments are all closed and there's no nearby food stall to grab a quick bite after a long flight. The hotel restaurants were also closed at that time so we had no choice but to bite the bullet and grab a few snacks from the mini-bar. There's a supermarket of limited stocks and a water vendor a few meters down the street, heading to the Pub Street area. If you want peace and quiet or want to return quickly to your room (and dip in the pool) after a dusty and sweaty Angkor tour, this hotel is perfect. If you're the type who wants to paint Siem Reap red, you're better off with hotels located near Pub Street or the Riverfront.

ROOMS - Rooms are large and generous. Beds are on the firm side but nonetheless very comfortable. There are complimentary fruits (bananas and longans) and water, replenished everyday. Bathrooms are large with bidets, with a few minor housekeeping issues (mostly stains on the tub, bowl and sink).

DINING - The Tong Tara international breakfast buffet is commendable, with the congee and noodle stations standing out as our favourites. The croissants however isn't as flaky and light as one would hope. We had a complimentary dinner for 2 included in our package and the Asian Set Menu at the Frangipani Restaurant were delicious and generous.

SERVICE - Staff were very friendly, efficient and always had a smile. All speak good English and can easily accommodate your requests.

OTHERS - We also had a complimentary 30 min. foot massage and availed it at the spa. You can take it after doing your temple tours. We didn't try the pool since the weather was a bit cool but from the looks of it, it's a godsend if you're coming in on hotter months.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 8, 2014

Time of Stay: 28/12/2013 to 2/01/2014
Rooms: Rating of 6/10. We had 3 rooms with 2 on the 2nd floor and 1 on the 3rd floor. All were looking a little tired but not too bad. As others have suggested the beds are on the firm side (but that doesn't bother me personally).
Location: Being just out of town suited us. Close enough for easy access but not in the thick of things.
Housekeeping: Would have to agree with other comments that this was a bit hit & miss. Seems soap & tea bags etc. were on a ration but a polite request always received prompt attention.
Dining: The breakfast buffet was a little on the average side. Pool side dining was quite okay for us although the beers were never actually cold. We only dined at the restaurant on one occasion and found the prices quite acceptable. On this occasion 5 of 5 meals were quite nice. In house beer prices could be considered a tad expensive, particularly considering the average price on the street, but that is par for course in any establishment I have been in Australia anyway.
Pool: I actually thought the pool would be bigger however it did look nice. We didn't swim as the weather was a bit cool for a dip during our visit (coolest Dec/Jan in 20 years or something).
Staff: We found all staff to be very friendly & obliging (& this was our experience with all Khmer during our travel in Cambodia).
New Years Eve buffet: Thought this warranted its own comment after reading previous comments. We were advised of the $55- per head NYE buffet deal on check in. We declined & did our own thing elsewhere and were not told it was compulsory & certainly not charged...

4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 8, 2014

We stayed for a few days to see the temples and as everyone says, the location is great and many people did the same as us. Even at 5 am, there were many people up at that time to see the sun rise over Angkor Wat (well worth the effort by the way), so this seems to be the hotel's niche.

Maybe because of the transient nature of the guests, for us, the hotel missed some 'soul' somehow as there is no central area for a bar for example and if you sit outside for a nighttime drink, the service is quite absent and it is all so quiet you feel like you have to whisper to have a conversation! There is a bar area, but it is sort of makeshift, is part of the general reception area and was neither busy or enticing.

Having said that, the rooms are great (although the beds are REALLY hard!), the bathroom is lovely, the general service was good and all the staff were very helpful. There is a screen on reception which gives live flight information which I thought was useful, but the computer area / system seems a little odd. There are about 6 new iMacs available for all to use (great), but no printer so if you need anything printing (boarding passes for example), you have to email anything you want printed to reception, who then print it for you.

In our situation, reception's email wasn't working so it took us nearly an hour to get two boarding passes printed. It seemed rather at odds to have all these modern, new iMacs available for general use, and then not provide a printer.

Breakfast was a good spread with many options available and we had some bar snacks round the pool area which were all delicious. The cocktail menu was also good and wine is available on the menu.

The pool area is deserted during the day as everyone is at the temples, but fills up rapidly in the afternoon. It is not in sunshine all day either, so in the afternoon the area is in the shade.

Although we heard some complaints about the speed of the (free) wifi, we had no issues and very much appreciated the facility and we used the spa facility which was also good (although not the best we have ever had).

Overall, we enjoyed our stay but next time would probably stay in another hotel. For reference, the Meridien and Sofitel hotels are very close to the Tara Angkor.

Room Tip: The rooms overlooking the front of the hotel can be quite noisy with traffic

3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 7, 2014

We stayed at the Tara Angkor for five nights at the start of January, including New Years Eve. We found the hotel to have some good aspects, such as generally helpful and friendly staff and rooms of a quite reasonable size with free but variable wi-fi. The pool was very nice with the cleanest, most pleasant water I have encountered in a hotel pool for a long time.
The two most disappointing aspects of the hotel were the standard of food (and the cost) and the housekeeping services. Taking housekeeping first, we only had the soap replaced once in the first three days and that was after we left a letter demanding that it be provided. Day one we had a dirty plate in the room from the previous occupant, day two no hand towels or soap, day three, room not serviced all day and was only done on request (demand) from us on return from a hot day walking around the temples. Coffee and creamer was obviously rationed and was only reluctantly provided for a second cup per person per day. Overall, while the room was superficially clean, the level of attention to detail and the standard of housekeeping was not high and most frustrating.
We considered the standard of food to be pretty average with a relatively limited choice for breakfast, particulalry for the western pallete. We were very disappointed with the compulsory $55/head charge levied for the New Year Gala. We had enjoyed an amazing lunch for Christmas Day at the E&O in Penang with four pages of dishes listed on the menue and at lower cost than this and that included unlimited drinks. The choice for the buffet at this place was pathetic and of not high quality and drinks were extra. Although denied by the staff at check-out, we belived other people who attended the gala who were on package tours were not charged the $55/head charge. The entertianment was of a low standard and could not justify a levy per person in this very low cost country. In addition to these aspects of catering, I ordered chips (French fries) by the pool plus chicken wings, which we would have liked to have been served together. The chips were delivered promptly but were cold, while the chicken wings took twenty minutes "because the kitchen was busy" (but the dining room was not open)!
Overall, the location was quite good but on balance, this was one of the less satisfactory hotels we have stayed at from the perspective of feeling that we were valued clients or getting value for money. We would try another hotel if we were to go to Siem Reap again.

Room Tip: Go elsewhere

Stayed in this hotel to see the temples. A good location, good standard hotel, pool area a little small and the hotel is popular with groups so breakfast can been very crowded. Friendly staff we went into town to eat in the evenings so can only comment that breakfast buffet was good.

This hotel was so close to the Angkor Wat temples which made pickup times for tours great. Wonderful breakfast buffet an free wifi. Service was excellent and people very friendly. Tuk tuks on standby to take us downtown only 5-10 min away. The only bad thing was it was a bit noisy since it was on a main road.

The Tara Angkor has everything a 4-star hotel should have—onsite restaurants, a bar, gift store, ability to arrange tours, and a spa. It's on the main street to Angkor Wat and also not that far from the Night and Traditional Markets.

The bed is one of the firmest I've ever slept on. I think a futon is softer. Although it wasn't the best for my taste, I slept quite well. The HVAC is one of the quietest.

The complimentary breakfast buffet was a bit of a disappointment. The dining room is smaller than the capacity of the hotel. Some days I had to clear a table to get a place to sit, as the staff wasn't around. The buffet had vegetarian, Asian, and Western choices, but the quality was quite average.

I was there over New Year's Eve. The hotel contacted me two days prior to leaving the USA to tell me there was a compulsory $55 charge per person for New Year's Eve. I was to attend their party. I found that a bit outrageous because I got great meals for $5 at the Night Market. I would have chosen to go there. (Of course I could have, but I would still be required to remit $55 to the hotel.)

The spa treatment I had was wonderful—a body scrub followed by a 60 minute massage.

If you stay at the hotel, I recommend eating elsewhere. There is some amazing food in Siem Reap, it's just not at the Tara.
