“A rare find”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 10, 2012

We were very lucky to have found this place. The rooms were spacious and well maintained, the staff were knowledgeable and helpful, and the amenities were great. Mark, the owner, went out of his way to help organize our activities, from scheduling guides and drivers to booking our onward travel. He knows the area extremely well and was always available for assistance and advice. The food was terrific; in particular the breakfasts (perfect fried eggs, crispy bacon!) and the burger was perhaps the best I’ve had in SE Asia so far. The staff have been properly trained and speak good English, reflecting a commitment from management that is quite rare. Overall, a very well run place, good value for money, and friendly vibe. Highly recommend it..

On arrival (6am) I was greeted by the pleasant night porter who quickly sorted my room and handed me the key... Pretty standard I hear you say but it was the welcoming smile that let me know that this was the perfect place to be.

Breakfast available was uk or Khmer and both were delicious.

Later on in the day I met with the landlord, Mark. What a nice guy!! He was quick to pass on tips to avoid being ripped off at the temples, on the street and in general. This is valuable information for all travellers and was most welcomed by myself.

I spent 2 days in the company of the lively staff and enjoyed every minute of it.

If you are planning a visit to Siem Reap I would highly recommend you stay at Downtowns perfect guest house. The price was great value and the people I met here enlightened me in every way.

In a word....... Incomparable.
In another word.... Perfect.

Its a fantastic hostel with everything you need. It is walking distance to markets, the bank and pub street! Mark is very welcoming and helpful while Danny can signpost you on your nights out! I ended up extending my stay twice which is always a good sign. I would reccommend to anyone traveling alone or otherwise to stay here, Its a real nice hostel. Oh yeah beer is half price during happy hour! ;)

Safe travels, John.

I stayed at downtown for 4 days and it was a great hostel. It has everything you need, comfortable rooms, friendly staff, 24 hour security, beer on tap at the friendly bar in the garden and very good food. One of the best steaks i have had in my time travelling!

I was planning on staying here 2 nights and ended up being "stuck" for 8 days. I had a great time at this hostel and met wonderful people. I was there during New Years and Mark and his staff organised a wonderful dinner. He even arranged a steak for me when I had forgotten to sign up for the dinner.

The rooms are cheap, clean and have a nice balcony for smoking, sitting down with a drink or just relaxing.
The hostel is a 5min walk from the center and Mark and his staff gave me some good suggestions for cheap local food.

If i ever come back to Siem Reap, i'll come back to this hostel. No doubt about it!

After reading the glowing reviews on here, we decided to leave our $12 a night room for a $10 one here. The prices fluctuate with the number of tourists in town or holidays, so you may see $8 - $15 for a private room. That $10 got us a nice room on the top floor called "paradise", and it certainly felt like it after long, hot days cycling to and from Angkor Wat. AC, Western TV, 2 full sized beds with great mattresses, hot shower, and a closet were included in that price. Our room faced a large, covered patio that was really nice for sipping drinks with a book to get out of the heat. Our room was always quiet, as the staff are very good about making sure the noise from the bar in the front yard stops promptly at 11:00. Speaking of the staff, Mark and his crew were second to none when it comes to great service: making sure we had a room (not too easy!), keeping us in said room as we kept piling days on to our initial stay, keeping our $10 price grandfathered in as prices rose for Christmas, helping arrange tours, pouring a pint or three of Angkor, cooking us great breakfasts...you name it and they probably did it, and always without complaint. The location is a nice 5 minute walk to Pub Street, meaning the loudest thing you'll here at night are usually the barking dogs roaming the streets. Staying at the Downtown also gets you access to any of the Golden Banana Resort's five (!) pools next door for just the price of a drink or nosh. Chelle's biggest complaint is the fact you can find hotels with pools on-site and a refrigerator in the room for about $12. It's true, but the extra level of service you get here is something you'll be hard pressed to find anywhere else. Highly recommended.

Great place to stay in Siem Reap, great location, good price for rooms and food! Great breakfasts and the staff are absolutely great. The owner Mark is English and really helps you out with information and general advice. Private rooms are cheap, dorms even cheaper and just as good. Me and 3 friends turned up having already booked into another place, but after having a breakfast and a look at the rooms and prices at Downtown Siem Reap we immediately changed to this place! Good little balcony on the second floor too if you want to smoke and drink and there is a free pool table at the bar downstairs.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Clean rooms, secure property, reliable and trustworthy service - that is our guarantee. Downtown Siem Reap Hostel is a hostel with high standards, but with backpacker and flashpacker prices. British owned and managed, and established in February 2011, Downtown Siem Reap Hostel has become one of the most popular hostels in Siem Reap, and now with a newly built swimming pool, bamboo gardens, and extra rooms, we are able to accommodate and serve 50 guests per night. Our accommodation includes cheaper fan dorms, AC dorms, twin and double rooms, 4 person rooms and deluxe family rooms (Feb 2013). Our kitchen is open from 6.30 am- with a cheap backpacker menu with all eats under $2.50, to Thai food and Western food- something for all budgets. Our breakfasts have always been a big hit, with set-breakfasts including tea/coffee and juice from $2.50. Our popular bar is open until 2 am, and often later - of course staffed by Western staff. We offer free pick-up from the airport and bus stations in Siem Reap, so please, always inform us of your travel details when booking- we cannot guarantee a booking unless we are responsible for picking you up. We are open 24 hours a day - we never close! Our success is due only to the shear dedication of the Khmer staff employed here. They speak excellent English, serve with a smile, and are here to make your stay as comfortable as possible. ... more   less
