This was my second trip to Siem Reap and my first stay at Heritage Suites. I was last here in 2002 and things have changed a lot. Prices have almost doubled for everything and so have the quantity of the tourists. Still, you can find draught beers for US 50 cents during happy hour on pub street.
The Heritage Suites hotel is situated near to downtown Siem Reap area although it is off the beaten path. You will need to take a Tuk Tuk to reach most places (US $1 per person each way). The hotel is actually located in a residential area next to a school and a Buddhist temple. This is a boutique hotel with a very strong French influence and the staff are fantastic and make the visit comfortable.
For it being one of the most expensive hotels in Siem Reap, it did not measure up to my expectations. Last time, I stayed at the Pansea (now La Residence d'Angkor) and I was impressed so that is my frame of reference.
The service: excellent
The food: good but expensive
The hotel: beautiful but lacking
We stayed in a Bungalow Suite which was beautiful, well decorated, large, spacious and private. There was no TV, refrigerator or coffee/tea making facilities. To be fair to the hotel, these things were never promised but when staying at a top end hotel, I would have expected these items to be in the room. The furniture in the room, other than the bed, wasn't functional. The chairs in the sitting area were literally the size used by children at a tea party. Beautiful and well crafted but painful to sit in and not functional if you want to lay back and read a book. There was a well manicured outside garden complete with outdoor shower. However, this also is not very functional unless you want to be an "all-you-can-eat" buffet for the swarming mosquitoes just outside. Again, this is Asia and the tropics so this isn't a surprise but you should consider why you are getting the room with these things in mind. A lesson we have learned.
Having said all this, the hotel is beautiful. The main house/reception is well designed as is the perfect place for breakfast or an after dinner drink. The pool is also extremely well maintained, clean and private. We spent many days enjoying our time there.
Of course, the staff are phenomenal. You need only ask and they are extremely attentive and helpful. We must truly thank the staff for the wonderful stay that we had.
With all this said, I would recommend the Heritage Suites if you are able get a deal that is significantly discounted off the standard rates. Although we had a splendid visit, next time we would consider other hotels.
