“Great stay in Siem Reap”

This was my second trip to Siem Reap and my first stay at Heritage Suites. I was last here in 2002 and things have changed a lot. Prices have almost doubled for everything and so have the quantity of the tourists. Still, you can find draught beers for US 50 cents during happy hour on pub street.

The Heritage Suites hotel is situated near to downtown Siem Reap area although it is off the beaten path. You will need to take a Tuk Tuk to reach most places (US $1 per person each way). The hotel is actually located in a residential area next to a school and a Buddhist temple. This is a boutique hotel with a very strong French influence and the staff are fantastic and make the visit comfortable.

For it being one of the most expensive hotels in Siem Reap, it did not measure up to my expectations. Last time, I stayed at the Pansea (now La Residence d'Angkor) and I was impressed so that is my frame of reference.

The service: excellent
The food: good but expensive
The hotel: beautiful but lacking

We stayed in a Bungalow Suite which was beautiful, well decorated, large, spacious and private. There was no TV, refrigerator or coffee/tea making facilities. To be fair to the hotel, these things were never promised but when staying at a top end hotel, I would have expected these items to be in the room. The furniture in the room, other than the bed, wasn't functional. The chairs in the sitting area were literally the size used by children at a tea party. Beautiful and well crafted but painful to sit in and not functional if you want to lay back and read a book. There was a well manicured outside garden complete with outdoor shower. However, this also is not very functional unless you want to be an "all-you-can-eat" buffet for the swarming mosquitoes just outside. Again, this is Asia and the tropics so this isn't a surprise but you should consider why you are getting the room with these things in mind. A lesson we have learned.

Having said all this, the hotel is beautiful. The main house/reception is well designed as is the perfect place for breakfast or an after dinner drink. The pool is also extremely well maintained, clean and private. We spent many days enjoying our time there.

Of course, the staff are phenomenal. You need only ask and they are extremely attentive and helpful. We must truly thank the staff for the wonderful stay that we had.

With all this said, I would recommend the Heritage Suites if you are able get a deal that is significantly discounted off the standard rates. Although we had a splendid visit, next time we would consider other hotels.

“Amazing boutique hotel”

Heritage Suites Hotel

We chose the Heritage Suites Hotel as we wanted a plush place to stay for our honeymoon with a bit of character. We had an amazing time.

The staff were all extremely helpful and genuinely interested in us. The ethos of the hotel was great - you could eat anywhere at any time as the staff appreciated that you could be jetlagged and keeping unusual hours.

We booked a cottage type room and it was completely luxurious with a steam room, two showers (one inside and one outside in our private garden), an enormous bed and free standing bath. The only drawback to the room was that the chairs and sofa looked beautiful but were uncomfortable to sit on!

The pool was cooled and salt water and lookedlike a photo shoot for a posh travel magazine.

Altogether we had a five star experience which was fantastic value for money.

It's not in the most convenient of situations, and new enough that most taxi drivers don't know where it is (make sure to remember the directions yourself), but it's a beautiful place and service is impeccable.

I will make the following suggestions to the property's owners:

1. The in-room sauna is kind of redundant. Only big enough for one, and not hot enough. You should use the space for an additional toilet, since the toilet in the room is too far from the bed.

2. The outdoor space is a good idea, but there was nothing which made us want to actually go out there. Even a table and chairs would have been something. What you should really do with the space is put a jacuzzi or hot tub or little plunge pool. These would justify keeping the outdoor shower which, at present, serves no purpose whatsoever. I - and most others - would pay another $100 for the room per night if the room had this feature.

3. The decor is a TOO zen. I felt like I was in a black-and-white movie. Our room was completely devoid of any color apart from a muted green bed runner. Cambodia is a colorful country. I expected the resort to reflect that more. The beautiful cushions in the seating space beside the gift shop and the main lobby - try putting some of those in the rooms for a start.

4. Fresh flowers in the living room would be a nice touch - especially scented ones like plumeria.

5. Advise your guests in advance when there is some event at the Wat next door and that it can be noisy. Otherwise, people who arrive on event days might think (as we did) that it's like that all the time.

6. Didn't see that beautiful collection of wines on the rack on the actual wine list??? We were on a second honeymoon and would have splurged on something better than Bourgogne Aligote had it been available.

Other than that, don't change a thing!

“Fantastic place!”

Heritage Suites Hotel

Feb 26, 2008

My boyfriend and I stayed in a suite here for two nights and absolutely loved it - I wish we could have stayed for longer!

The room was gorgeous - with a private garden, outdoor shower, steam room and big bath tub. The swimming pool area was also lovely and we had it to ourselves most of the time.

I thought the breakfasts were great, certainly the best I had on my travels through Vietnam and Cambodia! Food was more expensive than local restaurants but not badly priced compared to other 5* hotels.

Although the staff did not speak a lot of English they were very friendly and would do anything to help.

We did not explore the local area as we hired a tuk tuk driver who took us straight to the temples and the centre of Seam Reap whenever we wanted - this cost $50 for the three days.

I'd recommend this hotel to anyone, it's the perfect place to come back and relax after exploring the temples.

“A perfect retreat”

My husband and I just returned from Siem Reap where we stayed three nights at the Heritage Suites Hotel. We have stayed at some wonderful boutique hotels around the world, and this is now one of our favorites.

The hotel staff picked us up at the airport in a vintage Mercedes and provided cool, scented towels and fresh juices. We arrived on a Buddhist holiday, so we could hear the monks reciting their meditations/prayers that day. The hotel is situated across the street from a wat and a school, so it was a treat to see the children playing in the schoolyard when we left the hotel property.

We booked a deluxe room, but we were upgraded to a bungalow suite. We toured the deluxe room and it was very nice; we would have been quite happy there. But the bungalow had the "wow" factor with pod bath, indoor and outdoor showers, sauna, Zen design and a large glass doors opening to a private garden. Total privacy. We left the roman shades open at night so we could wake to the view of our garden in the morning.

The hotel is not in the middle of town and we liked it that way. It was great to come back to the serenity of this hotel and relax – away from the noise on bigger streets near the river, Pub Street and the center of town. It took only a few minutes by tuk-tuk to get to restaurants in the main part of town, but we chose to eat dinner at the hotel two out of three nights. We dined near the pool one night and upstairs in the main building another night. Both provided excellent food, service and ambience. We loved the "shrimp purses" appetizer and the Khmer dishes.

This hotel is a special place with wonderful staff and good management. I count myself lucky to have chosen this hotel over the others. It fit our preference for secluded, boutique hotels with great design and excellent service. We will definitely go back.
