“bad service, good location”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed May 13, 2008

This hotel is in a great location - where all the food outlets, pubs and bars, bakery, shops are found but the service is very bad compared to other places.

I had a bad experience with the hotel lady manager (local), she was absolutely rude. They did my laundry (i paid for it) but tore a big hole of my favourite shirt and returned it to me without informing me. I approached the manager, she asked me how much is my shirt worth. She even throw the money at me (in front of her other staff). No apologise at all. A minute later, she sent her staff to retrieve my torn shirt claiming she paid for it. Is this the kind of service you want from the staff there? Terrible!

Look for other cheaper options that comes with much more friendlier service.

i really enjoyed my stay at molly malones. i was very happy with the email communication and they had a car waiting for me at the airport. the room was spotless and the service was great. realize two things before you stay here. first its an irish bar in a tourist town. people drink and party until late. second. its in CAMBODIA not london or paris, small things like a broken a/c or sat.tv reception aren't fixed so quickly here.

the people that run the place were helpful and very nice. hot water a/c for 25 usd a night is perfect for those not wanting to break the bank at the high class joints but want a little more then a 8 usd guest house.

its in a great part of town right near the main market and the bar st. had a blast in cambodia

  • Liked — clean room, great people
  • Disliked — tuk-tuk drivers and touts out front...but thats not unique to this place, there everywhere

Molly Malone's has a great location.
It's literally a few minutes' walk from the centre of the city -- bar street, old market, night market.
and right next to all the bars, restaurants, spas and shops you'd want.

now for the downside. the rooms are right ABOVE the bar which has a BAND that plays every night. Yes, a band with LOUD music.

i could literally feel my bed shake with the thumping sounds that came from down below.

and when you wake up at the crack of dawn (well, at a civilized crack of dawn) to traipse through angkor wat and then you fall dead tired into bed at night, the last, the very LAST thing you need is your bed shaking from the sounds from downstairs.

so unless you like to party till the wee hours of the morning yourself, do yourself a favour. stay somewhere quieter.

in siem reap the maximum a tuk tuk drive to the centre of town is going to cost is $3.

and the good night's sleep you'll get is, trust me, well worth it.

What a wonderful place in the middle of Siem Reap's hustle and bustle. The place is charming! It was spotless , the food was really good, and the owners, Thierry and Emer are truly wonderful. I highly recommend Molly Malones for anyone looking to be at the centre of town without paying exorbitant prices, yet still get first class service.

Molly Malone’s

Having checked out of our original hotel, the too-stodgy Day Inn, we needed new accommodations pronto. So, we checked our Travel Fish print out sheet and came up with what it called an “immaculately clean” if low-priced place in the heart of the city called Molly Malone’s. The ground floor of the place is an Irish pub (the French Innkeeper, Theirry’s, wife is the Irish one) and, since a room wouldn’t be available until afternoon, we chose to check in, leave our luggage at the desk and deal with it later.

Knowing nothing about the city or how to get around it (that’s how we roll… ) we asked the desk clerk, a young Cambodian woman with limited English, if she could recommend a driver. She contacted a tuk-tuk owner/operator named Tola who turned out to be the greatest asset of our entire 25 day trip into SE Asia! Trip Advisor has a fully understandable policy against publishing the contact information for tips like this, but it is actually worth it for you to stop by Molly Malone’s and ask the clerk about Tola.

Anyway, when we returned in the evening from our day at Angkor Wat, etc. we finally saw the room into which we had checked that morning and it was, by all adult standards, unacceptable. At $25 USD (the main currency of Cambodia), the room was spare and, if was “immaculate,” the over worn furnishings would never reflect it. The mosquitoes swirling around our “terrace”-facing door light (the term terrace somewhat romanticizes the outdoor patch of roof furnished with garage sale reject furniture) were clearly only there waiting patiently for us to dare enter the room so that they could join us.

The place was unacceptable. Even another room, this one $35, shown to us after our initial rejection, was too nasty for our non-backpacking sensibilities.

By this point it was later and we had to stay somewhere, so, while dining at Malone’s (a fine pub-burger, which after many, many meals of the local foods, tasted astonishingly good – even if you don’t stay there, don’t resist the restaurant or the Guinness on tap – we tapped into the travel agent next door explaining that we didn’t mind spending a bit more to upgrade. Using this broker probably cost us a little more, but it got the job done quickly and we were soon very, very happy.

The Riviera Hotel is a negligible three minute walk from the heart of downtown Siem Reap. We paid $55, but we’re guessing that if it isn’t sold out, a little reception desk negotiating could drive that down. Their rooms are perfectly nice or maybe even better then that and the breakfast (included), will fuel even the hungriest traveler for the temple-hopping day ahead. There is also a pool and a spa on-premise (though it is likely comperable, less expensive services like message, etc. are aviable a few steps away on the main drag)

Located in the heart of town, MM is walking distance to all the eateries and pubs, and the old market too, for all those last min shopping! One of the last few left in the area, most former guest-houses have moved one or two streets away (e.g. Red Piano's guest-house). A quaint little guest-house with four poster beds loved the place; although you have to hold on to the key, else they will turn off the power to your room...

While it can get a noisy at night with the pub directly below, was not an issue for us so we really loved the place.

  • Liked — The convenience!
  • Disliked — Them turning off the electricity to your rooms when you return the key...

In the middle of town so couldn't be more convenient for the evening. The rooms are cheap and clean, but by no means luxurious.

If you go out try and make sure that they don't disconnect your electricity - if they do your room could be 95 degrees when you return as our's was - which is a little irritating after a hot afternoon among the temples.

No real complaints, but if you are going to Siem Reap for a special treat, you could do better.
