“Biggest and Best Preserved of Roluos Trio”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 16, 2013

While I enjoyed the smaller Rolous temple of Preah Ko more, Bakong was nevertheless quite beautiful and certainly very well preserved, considering its age. Its temple mountain architecture is most impressive; approaching Bakong from the bridge over the surrounding moat it is quite spectacular, with bougainvillea and other colorful flowering plants providing contrast to the gray sandstone of the main structure.

Being about 13km removed from the main Angkor temples means the crowds in Roluos are smaller, which is a plus, even if it means it takes a little longer to get to the area. It took us about 1/2 hour by tuk tuk, and it was a very pleasant drive with a few interesting sights along the way. I definitely recommend making the trip -- it's absolutely worth it.

“Best of the Roluos Group”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 4, 2013

Great contrast to other Angkor temples.
We really enjoyed how well this combination of brick and stone has lasted the test of time, with only very slight restoration.

“Bakong - The Ancient Shiva Temple”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 31, 2013

Some 25 kms away from the down-town of Siem Reap, Bakong is an ancient temple of Lord Shiva. Not as large as Angkor Wat or Bayon but has its own architectural significance. In ancient times the city was known as Hariharalaya where Bakong is situated. Can be given a miss if on a tight schedule. After a while and few temples at Angkor Archaeological Park, most of these look just the same.

“Mt Meru representation”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 10, 2013

It belongs to Roluos group and it's the first of many representations of sacred mountain Mt Meru, once you start visiting the Angkor area. It's the most interesting of the three temples and used to be the city's central temple. It's made of sandstone, with minor prasats around made of bricks. Overall it deserves a visit and it's not overcrowded with tourists, which is a plus that you'll learn quickly. On the ground level there's also an old wat that makes an interesting contrast.

“Worth a visit”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2013

Part of the Roluos group of temples, this temple is the most impressive of all and the surroundings add to the charm of the temple. With few tourists around, the peaceful atmosphere at the top and the view all around was well worth the visit. It is 13 kms away from the city, we had combined it with a trip of the Big circuit of temples.
