“What a surprise!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 4, 2013

What a pleasant surprise Banteay Srei was and well worth the trip out through villages where we could see life in Cambodia. The red stone is so different to the other Temples that we had visited and the intricate carvings were breathtaking. I got some great photos here, a play of light and colour. A must and be prepared to be blown away.

“The Citadel of Women”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 4, 2013

This site is the farthest from Siem Reap about 32 km. It is well worth the visit to see the pink sandstone temple as well as the people at work in the surrounding countryside. The temple is known for its beautiful and intricate carvings adorning the entire structure. It is unique in the fact the women are venerated for a change as this is a part of the world that is decidedly patriarchal!

“Worth the trip out to this temple”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 4, 2013

Again, go early. We took a car which was took around 45 minutes. We didn't have a guide but again were mesmorised but the carvings and detail of this temple. The kids loved exploring and climbing around the ruins.

“Nice reliefs”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 4, 2013

The reliefs at this temple are pretty well conserved. So that you can observe the magnificence of the work done hundreds of years ago. Although you cannot have a closest look to the middle of the temple were the pink statues are located it is still very nice

“Beautiful but very busy in the mornings!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 4, 2013

Banteay Srey is a 10th century Temple that is dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva; the name loosely translates to Citadel of the Women so it is often called the Women’s Temple. This is only a recent title and it is thought to be due to the delicate carvings.

The colors of the pink sandstone here are beautiful and this Temple has some of the finest examples of Khmer classical art. Here you will find walls covered with deep intricate carvings, more so than any other Ankorian Temple.

Banteay Srey was discovered by French archaeologists’ late in 1914.

Visiting here in the morning is very popular, so much so we really did not enjoy looking around as there were busloads of tourists everywhere pushing and shoving past. After 2pm is apparently better due to fewer tourists.

Banteay Srey is about a 40 kilometer drive from Siem Reap, so combine a visit with Banteay Samre.
