“Relaxing place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 11, 2013

My wife and I really enjoyed our stay in Les Bambous when we visited Siem Reap. The grounds are really beautiful and the pool really peaceful, making the hotel a perfect place to come back to after a long day of visiting temples.

The owners are a French family who were very friendly and helpful throughout our stay, as were the staff.

Breakfast was absolutely delicious (the best we've had on our 2 month trip so far), with fresh baguette and yogurt & fruit or eggs included in the price. Finally, we had fried eggs that were runny instead of being overcooked like everywhere else in Asia!

However, there were a few niggles that prevent us from giving this a 5 star review. First is the distance from town. The hotel is about 3km away from central Siem Reap, which means you will be forking out $4-6 for each round trip you take to go out. As there really isn't anything around the hotel, you'll find yourself taking at least one tuk tuk trip a day, which adds up after a few days.

Also, while the room and bathroom were both spacious and clean, I can't say they were really 'boutique' in any way. Furnishings were relatively minimal and the bathroom was very basic, with a door that didn't close. We paid $28 a night instead of $70 thanks to a discount on Agoda, which was good value. However, if we had paid full price and expected a real boutique hotel, we would have been a bit disappointed.

Overall though, our stay was very positive and we wish Francois and his family good luck with the business!

The hotel, descriptions and photos are conform to what we could see on the website : the garden is beautiful (no dog crab as it is written in a previous review!!!), the swimming-pool and jacuzzi are amazing and relaxing after a whole day on the temples, the owners Nathalie and Francois are very welcomig and nice persons and also very attentive to their customers, the rooms are very nice, clean, well furnished and air con was very good and strong enough to cool the room in a few minutes. We spent half of our stay on the temples and half by the pool and we really appreciated the calm of this place and its location which was only 10 minutes from (very noisy) downtown. The wifi was also very good, we had Ipad and Iphones and we never had any problem to check our email or even book our next flights.
We first planned to stay for 3 days at Les Bambous and felt so comfortable and relaxed that we finally stayed for 6 days.
To sum up, Les bambous met all our expectations : calm, cleanliness, kindness and helpfulness. We hope we can come back very soon !!!

Despite the glowing reviews posted here, our experience at Les Bambous was very disappointing.

First, be aware that the hotel is off the main road, so the tuk tuk drivers have no idea where it's located. It's also far from central Siem Reap, so you're going to need a tuk tuk every time you want to go back and forth to town, which although inexpensive, can add up if you're doing multiple trips during the day for shopping, dining, etc. There's really nothing much around the hotel in the way of shops or restaurants.

The rooms (the ones facing the pool) are large, but are sparsely furnished. No desk, just a very small table to hold tea and coffee and a wooden chair.

Air con take a long time to cool the room and it never seemed to get really cool to where it was comfortable.

Although they advertise that there is wifi, it's spotty at best, frequently drops out when you're online and is definitely nowhere close to high speed.

The proprietors seem friendly, but if you need to check out early for some reason, be prepared to be hit with some substantial fees, like an extra day and a half charge for your room. This cancellation policy isn't mentioned anywhere on their website. In our case, we found the hotel was too far from town, where we had to be every day while working and bringing equipment for a nonprofit project with an orphanage there. Even though it was low season, the hotel was nearly empty (we only saw one other person staying there), and we explained what the problem was with the location, the proprietors still charged us a day and a half extra for the two rooms we had booked. Not a good way to endear yourselves to your customers.

Dear guests,
We were very surprised by the 2 reviews you wrote concerning our hotel as those ones do not reflect reality. Nevertheless if we should answer point by point to your remarks, we would say that as it is notified on the map on our website, the hotel is indeed not on the main road which avoids dust and noise.
You know there are more than 400 hotels in Siem Reap and it seems obvious that tuk tuk drivers do not know about all the locations (most of them come from the countryside and only stay few months in Siem Reap to earn more than in their homeland).
Far for some people, not far for others it is clearly stipulated on our website that we are not located downtown but despite that one can find within easy walking distance, a local market, one supermarket and some restaurants (or even ours).
As you noticed the Deluxe rooms are spacious and both furnished with a king size bed, 2 bedside tables, one coffee table with 2 chairs for tea and coffee facilities, one wardrobe with hangers and a safety box, one cupboard with the minibar inside and a desk with a stool as well as a table and 3 chairs on the terrace.
Of course Cambodia is a warm country but maybe it was not necessary to leave the air con and lights on in the room and the bathroom all day long while you were out, our air con is powerful enough to cool the rooms in a few minutes.
Regarding the wifi, we use the best internet access provider however it may be possible that it doesn't work as well as in USA !
As you know, you booked the 2 Deluxe rooms 2 months ago and since then we had many requests for these 2 rooms. As we have only 2 Deluxe rooms we had to refuse many bookings and your early departure which was not due to us but to the fact that you didn't check (or realize) the distance between the hotel and your workplace, involved, as in most of the hotel in the world, penalty fees as it is written behind the doors of each room. For a cancellation of 8 nights from one day to the next we only kindly asked you for an extra night and a half which is in fact very little if you consider the loss of profit that 8 nights x 2 = 16 nights represent which is still well below the usual cancellation policies.
Best regards

This small oasis is a great place to stay. It is located in a quiet street just outside of town , only 10 min by tuk tuk . This resort has a wonderful garden and a very nice and clean pool with
salted water and many green plants. We stayed with our 3 children in a Deluxe room in front of the pool. The room was huge, very well designed and very clean as well. The staff was very friendly and the service excellent. The owners are also very nice and helpfull and don't hesitate to arrange everything for you.The restaurent is also very good and we were pleasantly surprised at how cheap their prices were compared to restaurant down town .
This hotel definitly knows how to look after its guests and we highly recommend it !!!

Room Tip: The Deluxe room is perfect for a family with 3 children.

Les Bambous hotel looks nice from the pictures but…
The hotel has terrible Wi-Fi (the owner even told us that the internet doesn’t work well with Macs when we arrived; later his wife said no one had ever had any Wi-Fi problems.)
The curtains are very thin, so if you stay here, I hope you like waking up with the sun. Since I was up so early, I went early to breakfast to find dog crap all over the outdoor eating area. The waiter apologized but said there was no security that day, so dogs would run in. I assume these were the same dogs barking most of the night.

The bathroom stinks.

Every time we left the hotel, our air conditioning would mysteriously go off. It was about 35 degrees C in Siem Reap, so it took up to an hour for the room to cool back down. When we inquired about the AC, the owner said it was too expensive to keep it running and someone was coming by turning it off.

When we told the owners we wanted to leave early, they said it was a “big problem” because other guests had wanted our room. However there was only one other room booked in the entire hotel (this should have been our first clue). The owners made us feel very uncomfortable and were extremely rude when we informed them of our check-out plans. They charged us for an extra night and a half even though they admitted there was no cancellation policy on their website. We paid it because we just wanted to get out of there.

The one star is for the homemade yogurt, it was very good.

Returning from a day climbing temple stairs in the noonday sun, to this lovely quiet green oasis, with the best swimming pool ever, was heavenly. It is located on the airport road, one road behind, so is quiet and not as dusty, and is only a 10 min.($2) ride to the center of town. The proprietors are friendly, knowledgeable and very helpful, all of which makes everything very easy. They even have a group of tuk tuk drivers available for full day hire,$15 going rate, who drive safely, speak a bit of English, and are also friendly.
The saline pool is so wonderful, that it is a wonder that anyone still uses chlorine. Both pools in ChiangMai, and Bangkok where I stayed were so heavily chlorinated as to be unswimable

Perhaps we were charged the low season price, but more and it still would have been excellent value. Book in advance because although the ground and buildings are large, the rooms are limited. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone who is staying in Siem Reap, and I myself would stay nowhere else. This is THE place.

This is definitely a hotel we highly recommend. François, Nathalie and their daughter Jade were really lovely, caring, delightful, making us feel like at home.
The pick up with the tuk tuk was perfect, Pisen the driver was really sweet and caring. The check in was fast, François welcomed us. The room was big enough for us and our baby with all normal facilities. The room was very clean, attention to details for decoration.
The garden is absolutely beautiful, the breakfast area, the bar area, the pool area: everything is made for you to feel comfortable.
The food was amazing, so good that we ate 90% of the time in the hotel. They brought us home made yoghourt for our baby who loved it, François made him some carrots puree that was delicious! The prices are really affordable.
The swimming pool is salty, really good for babies like ours, we could swimm there every day after walking all morning in the hotness of Siem Reap and Angkor.
François, Nathalie and Jade know when to talk to you, or when you want to stay quiet and alone. This is something we really appreciated, and we loved talking with them about Khmer culture, food, history. They gave us really good tips about the trips, where to go, and when. All the staff was really sweet, smiling and caring.
The last diner in the hotel, we ate with them, just like with friends.
The only thing I would recommend for improvement would be to have an amplifier of wifi, but this is very minor.
If we go back to Siem Reap, we would definitely go back there!
