“Very mellow place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 21, 2013

A good place to stay while you visit the temples. Location is excellent, near the markets and the restaurants. Upstairs is a balcony and tables and there is a restaurant attached with really friendly staff.

It is more relaxed than another place we stayed at which we moved from because it was too noisy. Here you could sleep in when you wanted and chill out after a hard day walking round the temples.

Shadow of Angkor I is a great stop over for those who won't be spending too much time at their hostel. My group and I stayed here recently for 2 nights without complaints. The bathroom facilities were clean and useful; the beds were very comfortable; the room cooled well when the A/C was on. Security is present at night and the staff mainly keep to themselves.

Other than that, the hotel doesn't offer much of anything else except for its excellent location within the Old Market of Siem Reap. Most things are walkable from here.

We stayed at Shadow of Angkor for one night ($15 for double) and found another guesthouse straight away.

It's okay, I believe the rooms were clean but very dated and a little grotty. The door handle in the bathroom was rusted for instance and had sharp, broken shards sticking out which could have given a nasty gash if you weren't careful.

The staff seem pleasant enough, they keep to themselves really except the tuktuk driver who mimicked all others in the city badgering us as we walked by. At night they close over a railing with a security guard outside and a staff member in a little tarpaulin tent inside. It was funny and a bit weird when we came back to the hotel and the security guard couldn't rouse the guy inside, he was poking his fingers though the grate and shaking his hammock to wake him. It took a few minutes before he groggily unlocked the door which was funny.

At night our room was a little noisy (close proximity to pub street will do that) and the fan jammed at one point in it's rotation leaving me roasted and my husband frozen in the morning!

All in all it's not a bad guesthouse by any means and it is clean and well located but there are much nicer ones out there for the same price if not cheaper.

If Siem Reap was real fun for me, Shadow of Angkor contributed a lot to this.
The Guesthouse is clean, perfectly situated, gives an access to the swiming pool in their other building 10 minutes by walking away from this one (Shadow of Angkor II).

It's located 2 min away from pub street and all bars/restaurants/night life.

They arrange the visit for you to Angkor Wat if you want, help you with the entry pass, and stay with you the entire day to show you everything that you need to see. If you want detailled info, of course you need an official guide, but if you're not an achitecture afficionados, and just curious about Asian culture, then it is way more than good enough!!

Enjoy your stay here!

We chose this hostel after reading about it in Lonely planet. But since we got high expectations we got a little bit disappointed.
The Hostel has a great location but otherwise there is nothing special about it. The breakfast is a little bit over priced and we found it strange to pay 5 dollar extra for a balcony you share with other people.
But the Staff is nice and the rooms are OK.

I only stayed at Shadow of Angkor I for one night because the hotel I wanted to stay in was fully booked until the next day. It was ok, nothing exceptionnal. Location was great, staff was friendly. Communal area was fine, with a view over the river. But the room I got wasn't great at all, it had no window and was really small, and it was noisy (I could hear someone watching television). From what I see on the pictures, the other rooms looked much better! Try to avoid the room I got, I was on the highest floor (after climbing two flights of steep steps), when you turn left it is the last one at your right.

I love hotels with balconies and views of rivers , so I really liked this gem of a hotel in the older part of the town. The staff in the hotel and in the restaurant were great, always helpful and friendly. the room was large and clean and very good value.
