I really only wanted to get to the floating villages for the photographic opportunities and explained this to our tuk tuk driver. He bought our tickets for us ($US25 for the two of us) and gave us the run down about not parting with any money if we didn't so desire. We got a boat to ourselves and the guide was fairly informative on the way out but he had great difficulty when we said that we didn't want to stop out in the middle of the lake, didn't want to be approached by beggars, didn't want to visit the orphanage school and just wanted to cruise around the villages to get photos because I am an artist.
The 'guide' started getting fairly short with us even though I had told him my exact intentions before leaving the wharf. He cited low water as the reason that we couldn't get into the other village on the lake. I had to really put the pressure on just to get back to the village for another run through. At this stage he lost all interest in anything but getting back to the wharf and explaining how he needed so much money for education etc. By the time we agreed (mainly because he had become so morose) he had stopped any sort of attempt at 'guiding'.
Someone is making megabucks out of this scam and I feel that they should at least fund the school from their rakings. I got some great shots and ended the cruise explaining to the guide what hospitality should involve.
