“Top hotel...with even better food!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 4, 2013

We throughly enjoyed our stay at the Sofitel at Siam Reap. The rooms were spotless, generous in size, overlooking a magnificent tropical garden with some of the most beautiful Lotus Flowers we have seen this side of China! Staff was friendly and attentive to our every whim and desire. Bakfast was a delight, with a wide variety of food to choose, specially tropical fruit. What was less than expected was the pool: as warm a a thermal bath (35 degrees centigrade), you start to worry what kind of bacteria make this pool their habitat.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 2, 2013

We enjoyed wonderful and relaxing 4days/3 nights at Sofitel Angkor over Khmer New Year in April 2013. The hotel has colonial charm with a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. What sets it apart is the setting in a lush and spacious tropical garden around lotus ponds offering oriental tranquility.
Hotel: Set on the outskirts of downtown Siem Reap on the road to Angkor Wat. Airport transfer is less than 20 minutes and provided on request by the hotel. Check in was seamless. Leaving the car we were seated in the lobby and served an ice cold towel and iced drink for refreshment. Whilst sipping the drink we signed in and were shown to our room subsequently. Our luggage arrived a minute later. On our way we passed through the tropical garden echoing with the sounds of cicada and tropical birds. The sound of the busy city outside only a distant memory. In the evening torches add romantic illumination.
Room: We stayed in 345 on the 3rd floor. It is elegant colonial, with teak floors and ceiling fan rotating slowly, but up to date on wifi, TV, aircon etc. Closet space is more than enough for two. Beds are comfortable. Bath room with tub and extra shower and of course French toiletries (L’occitane). Surprising the strong water pressure in the shower. Unnecessary to mention that everything was kept clean. Our room overlooked the garden and lotus pond facing east with beautiful sunrises every morning. Windows should not be opened to keep insects out. Room was made up twice daily. Fresh towels and replenished toiletries every time. Nice was the thoughtfulness of placing complimentary give aways like banana leaf- wrapped Lemon gras perfume, cookies or Khmer shawls when making up the room.
Restaurants: Buffet breakfast catering to every need: Continental, French, English, American and Asian. Fruits and smoothies, variety of breads, cakes etc. Open kitchen for omelettes, pancake , waffles and pan fried items. We liked the iced Perrier water every morning. For us it was delightful to have breakfast outside on the open veranda under high ceiling fans.
Pool/Wellness: Very large pool area with plenty of sun beds and pool bar is a joy. After a day visiting Angkor even a pool with 31° is wonderful. Complimentary iced drinks served with some fresh cut fruits are a nice touch and add to the relaxing mood. We didn’t use the spa.
Service: Always friendly, smiling and helpful throughout the hotel. English/French is not spoken fluently from all members of staff, but made up easily with a smile. Breakfast service on the veranda lacked sometimes a bit of attention, but was nothing to complain about.
Pros and Cons: In our view the lush tropical garden with its lotus ponds, huge pool and tranquil atmosphere is the biggest asset of Sofitel Angkor. Such a spacious setting requires a few more meters to walk between the facilities. However, the surroundings outweigh this by far in our opinion. Rooms have good layout and size. When they face the inner garden it's added value. Service and amenities were to our satisfaction. Is it 5*? Your standards may vary between London and Cambodia. However, people make the difference and this place made us feel good, welcomed and offered everything we needed. We stayed during the low season and the hotel was not fully booked. The main restaurant featured a Cambodian dance and music show in the evenings. Beautiful costumes. Food and beverage at the hotel have European prices. But with such a large choice outside you can decide what you prefer. Being approximately 2km from the city center you need a TukTuk into town. Its 2 Dollars one way, fun to ride, takes less than 10 minutes and was always instantly available. Back to the hotel as well. We have been given a late check out without any problems due to our early evening departure. We would return anytime.
Tips on visiting Angkor: Currency of choice is US Dollar everywhere. Apply for an e-visa if eligible. It shortens immigration tremendously. Walking off the plane through immigrations into the waiting taxi with hand luggage was less than 15 minutes. Foreigners are not allowed to drive cars or motorbikes by themselves. So you need assisted transportation to see Angkor. Depending on your preferences the short or long temple circuit is 17 or 26 km respectively and some temples are even 50 km away. With a temperature of 35-40° hiking or cycling may not be for everybody. We had a private guided tour with air conditioned car and plenty of iced water. Our favorite temple was Preah Khan. Thanks to our guide’s planning we had it almost for our self one afternoon, despite the fact that over Khmer New Year ten thousands of Cambodians visit Angkor Wat.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the lotus pond and inner garden are wonderful.

Pros:
- Fabulous layout with lots of greenery right in the heart of Siem Reap
- Great welcome at the airport (a Sofital mini-van was there with a very pleasant driver who offered cold towels and bottles of water at the airport before escorting us to the vehicle) - similar welcome on arrival at the hotel
- Exemplary staff, particularly concierge and restaurant/chef (too many to individually mention here!)
- The Operations Manager (Benoit) is one of the best I have ever met
- The whole place feels like a great combination of olde-world charm with all mod-cons (although WiFi is patchy and should be improved!)
- The breakfast and a la carte menu are some of the best I have had anywhere

Cons:
- The full-day tour guide and vehicle we hired through concierge was average and the driver would turn off the AC and ask us to leave the vehicle whenever we went to a tourist spot - some of us wanted to stay in the vehicle on occasion due to the searing 39C heat! So no tip whatsoever!
- Golf course over 20km away from hotel and quite expensive (we did not try it)

Conclusion:
- Very relaxing experience - exactly what we wanted for the 4 nights we stayed. Whole-heartedly recommend this hotel for any stay in Angkor/Siem Reap. Would go as far as suggesting its one of the best 5* resort-style hotels I've stayed at (and I travel quite a bit)

Room Tip: Best value for money is the Junior Suite (some of us had the Prestige Suite and some had the Juior S...

The hotel is a fantastiC value. The price is excellent for what you get, which is wonderful because so many hotels are becoming overpriced hese days. the food is AMAZING and better than any other place we went to. The staff and service is very pleasant. Lobby is great and smells amazing. The rooms have everything you need, clean and well kept. The easy fixes are: the pool needs to be re-tiled and pool area a more modern look, room showers can be upgraded.

This beautiful resort lives up the Sofitel's statue with a sprawling property sprinkled with large lily ponds, waterfalls and a swimming pool that is enticing to look and delightful swim in. After the heat, crowds and noise of Angkor Wat and it's many temples, this is a perfect place to relax and rejuvenate your mind and body in. The food is exceptional and the staff can't do enough for you.
My room was so pleasing I really didn't want to leave it. It was large with a great balcony over the gardens and one of the ponds. At night the lighting was perfect through the resort accenting the resort's calmness and beauty. Loved my stay.

I'd have to say that the Siem Reap Sofitel was the best total hotel experience I've ever had. Totally unexpected and far above expectations for such a remote place.

From the reception (cold towel and car - to contrast the rather abrupt customs officer!!) at the airport to the hotel staff from doormen to reception to bar and restaurant staff could not have been better and the massage was the best I've ever had as well. Top this with the extraordinary experience of visiting Angkor Wat and the other amazing temples, the great fresh water sea and the fun of the night markets. Hard to beat for a life experience of great contrasts and among friendly people who seem not yet to be bored to death by European tourists.

Of course the night market like any market worldwide was the province of lots of people wanting to relieve you of all your money but comparatively most pleasantly.

And underlying superficiality of the tourist holiday level an insight into the tragedy of this country and the strength and resilience of its people.

Room Tip: We had a first floor room (only two floors) with a balcony overlooking the lake and pavilion. Beauti...

Very convenient location near Angkor temple complex. The hotel offers spacious and clean rooms. The food is of very high quality and the breakfast buffet is huge. They have a lovely pool area which is perfect to relax after a temple tour day.
I booked a guide through the hotel and had a very informative tour. The first concierge (Asian lady wearing a suite with I think Japanese name) was not very helpful at all and was not very interested to give advice. Later went back and another young lady named Channa who was outstanding. She gave so much advice and organised a private tour according to my wishes for the next day. Big thanks her.
The airport transfer was very special. The driver Mr. Sea did not only drive me to the airport but gave a lot of info abot his county on the way to the airport
Would definitely recommend this hotel
