We could tell from our very first contact with Rahim, the owner of the Pool & Palm Villa, that we will be taken care of. And we weren’t wrong.
Staying at the Pool & Palm Villa felt like staying with a friend, with staff who checks on you to see if you’ve had dinner, and bringing little surprises like the local fried bananas on a serving platter to sweeten the experience further. The service was impeccable!
The four of us stayed in two bedrooms in a private villa with a huge living room beautifully decorated khmer-style. It faces the café by the pool on one end, and the entrance of the villa at the other. We were surrounded by luscious greens at all time, and were welcomed by the resident gecko sitting at the top of the villa door. Space was never an issue. I could lay my yoga mat in the hall while my daughter lounged amongst comfortable throw cushions, playing Rahim’s guitar, which he had very kindly sent to her room when he learnt that she was missing her own.
Oh, and the saltwater pool! It was beautiful, and because this isn’t a typical crowded hotel, we often had the pool all to ourselves. We could spend hours in the pool, simply because it was well-kept, and set amidst calming green.
Food at the café was also very nice, and because it was halal, we found ourselves returning to eat at the villa each day – never getting bored of its menu. And we were there for five days, mind you!
We could also rely on the tour services provided by the villa – visiting the temples, going on elephant rides & the ATV, going to the night markets and the local fun fair, having a local roadside dinner of grilled meat and vegetables in a boiling pot of hot soup (and garnished with fresh cumin – this, was really nice!) and numerous stopovers at the Blue Pumpkin for its mango gelato. The best part? Rahim would always join us whenever he could – and having him around meant that we could listen to him talk about Siem Reap, her people, her culture, and be introduced to a slice of local life you don't see otherwise.
Would we return to Siem Reap? With God’s grace, we would. And we’d definitely go back to staying at the Pool & Palm Villa – a choice we never regretted. After all, wouldn’t you rather stay with a good friend when you’re on holiday?
