“an oasis when you least expect it.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 3, 2013

Kanell provided us with a fantastic food experience after 3 weeks travelling through Vietnam and Cambodia. Tucked away across the river from the mainstream of eateries in Siem Reap, it has a great atmosphere for all occasions. We had dinner there with 5 others in the main dining area, and lunch the next day out on the balcony (yes it was that good we came back for more!) but there are also sheltered tables in the beautiful garden area plus a pool. A bonus in the heat!
We had traditional fish amok, but also salmon, beef and chicken dishes which were all delicately flavoured and brilliantly presented. Desserts were also to die for, with the pineapple carpaccio with lime sorbet a favourite. And the prices were no more than other eateries.
At lunch the next day, we went for the entrees including delicious prawns on skewers. We were pleasantly surprised at the end by the host giving us each a passionfruit sorbet on top of a fresh passionfruit straight from the garden. Service with a genuine smile.
The prices were super reasonable for the quality of food.

“The best meal ever”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 22, 2013

A group of six of us on a guided tour all just had the best meal in 3 weeks of daily restaurant meals at Kanell. The salmon with tarragon cream sauce was to die for. Others at the table had the duck salad, fish amok, beef curry and chicken amok. All fantastic. Couldn't fault the staff. All were very friendly and spoke very good English, as well as French. Dessert topped off the night with all ordering something different and as perfect as everything else we had. The prices were also great. All up US$125, including beer and wine, and that was with a guided tour of their garden with dining and pool area downstairs. All up we had a memorable night and strongly recommend Kanell. A tuk tuk trip, but well worth it.

“Just ok for me”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 21, 2013

My problem with this restaurant was that the waitress was not able to explain to me some of the dishes, it limited my options and there were not many to start with. Ordered eggplant with meat, the eggplant taste a bit bland, the portion can feed 3 people, it was a bit wasteful. Did like my mocktail though. My friend had ginger chicken, she liked her food.

“Very Nice Meal, Lovely setting, Good service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2013

We had a really super dinner at Kanell. The staff were very friendly and explained the menu well giving good recommendations. We were welcomed by the owners wife and made to feel extremely welcome. The food was delicious. And very reasonably priced. I would absolutely go back and recommend my friends to try it out. As there has been a lot of rain and flooding we sat upstairs and not in the garden, but we really liked the atmosphere. The pork tenderloin was very delicious- huge portions!

“Best among the restaurants we've tried in Siem Reap!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 9, 2013 via mobile

Our dining experience at Kanell for our last night in Siem Reap was the best choice we made. We were the only guests when we arrived at 6pm. We sat on the terrace instead of the garden as we were afraid of potential insect bites. The restaurant felt like an old Cambodian house with lovely oriental decorations and lightings.

The banana blossom salad was so delicious. I ordered French style pork sirloin which was a little dry for me but the accompanying sauteed potatoes were mouthwatering. The black sesame icecream on french toast was interesting with its ginger and cinnamon flavour beautifully balanced however there was only one scoop of it and my husband, whie having a chat with the manager, said it was too small. Then the manager kindly offered us complementary passionfruit from their own garden with sorbet on top. We heard from him that the owner is a French who has the original chain in France and they have a French and a Cambodian chef.

Pricewise, very reasonable considering their standard of service, food, and the ambience-1 entree, 2 mains, 1 dessert, 2 fruit drinks and 2 alcoholic drinks all came down to around US$40.

I would highly recommend Kanell and would return again if we visit Siem Reap again :)
