“Return visit - and well worth it”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 25, 2013

It has been a year since I last visited the restaurant that ploughs all of its profits into the Green Gecko Project - an amazing home for former street children.
The food is delicious, with some speciality dishes to get you really interested. The prices are unbelievably low .... and the staff are friendly, efficient and very entertaining!

“Hard to find, street like seating, street like food, but...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 19, 2013

..it is for a good cause right? So i cannot really objectively write a review since i do no want to be a spoiler. hard to find place in a dark street, nice hippie like ambiente, you seat on plastic seats and the tenant may ask you to share table with other people if there isn t enough space, makes it a different experience than a real restaurant. food is...well..cambodian original i guess, so don t expect any gourmet experience here, prices are low and service nice and local style. don t dress up and don t have to great expectations and you will be fine!

Wow Larry ... It would seem you were quite objective & to the point .... not a 'real restaurant'. The food,..well..Cambodian original I guess, so don't expect any gourmet experience". You got it in one, Larry aside from the real restaurant comment.

Larry, Green Star is a 'local experience' with traditional, fresh, Cambodian dishes ... locals as well as others eat at Green Star. Gourmet is not traditional Cambodian fare. Perhaps as a 'fine diner' Green Star is not the sort of place you frequent & so we are sorry your experience was not the one you were looking for.

But be assured Larry, we do exist for a good cause (without the question mark), but we, and the majority of our patrons feel aside from this, their food experience has been a more than positive one, perhaps as validated by our TA ranking, being listed in the top ten things to do in Siem Reap on the CNN travel site & one of the top 5 places to eat at in Siem Reap according to the Lonely Planet Guide. it's our patrons & silent reviewers who give rise to us listed as such.

Certainly, we are not to everyone's taste, but Larry, we do have some of the local 4/5 star hotel chefs (Western & Khmer) eat at Green Star or refer people to us so I guess we must be doing something right. It does not mean we have to offer a Gourmet experience, but rather, our food objective is good simple food, a taste of the real Cambodia.

Nevertheless Larry, thanks for at least giving us a try, we certainly thank you for your support of the green gecko project by way of your having dines with us. take care Doug & Avee

“Great food in a good cause”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 18, 2013

My fave in Siem Reap...yep its not flash, and the service is friendly rather than polished but what you get is bloody fabulous food (the roasted corn, morning glory, even the raw shrimp thingies). Avee is spectacular, Doug is wonderful and all the profits go to supporting young Cambodians become the leaders their country so desperately needs. Get your thongs on, order a cold beer and munch out.

“Average - poor service left”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 2, 2013

Eagerly looked for this restaurant. A bit disappointed when we got there, the place was not very clean albeit that the food is cheap. The owner was doing a marketing job to the table near us. After 10 minutes of staring at the menu and trying to order we got up and left.

Eric, we are sorry your experience/perception of Green Star was not a good one. Certainly it is in contradiction to that experienced by most.

I would question your view that the restaurant is not very clean. The venue is old & may, to some, give rise to such a perception but be assured, it is not the case.

I try & talk to all customers as time allows & it is not a 'PR' job. Avee & I appreciate the support our patrons provide to The Green Gecko Project by way of eating at Green Star & I like to ensure that our patrons understand the work we do, the children, families & wider community we support &, therefore, where their 'contribution' is going. It's reasonable & gives our patrons an insight into the 'other side' of life in Cambodia.

January, when you visited is a very busy time for us at Green Star but I have to say, & confidently so, that never has a customer had to wait 10 minutes to order let alone spend that amount of time without even being able to attract the attention of our staff, myself, or Avee. having said that, your perception is your reality & we apologise that your experience was not a good one.

“Five Stars for Green Star”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 1, 2013

This has to be the best reason to eat in Siem Reap. Everything is for the kids. They are part of the green gecko project and all the profits go back into the business, the tips go to the staff. Doug (an Aussie) and his wife Avee, have created something special. The food is good and cheap, the beer is cold (go for the tower). We shared a table with a couple of backpackers as we hadn't booked, but it turned out to be a great experience. Avee started singing and Doug sat down and shared his, and their, story with us. Very special and humbling. Its not in pub street, so it makes it a nice change from the masses.
