While staying in Singapore for an extended business trip, I decided to spend a long weekend in Siem Reap for a ‘temple extravaganza’. My original hotel of choice was not available, so I booked Siddharta instead, having checked the reviews in Trip Advisor. I was absolutely delighted with my choice.
My Check-In was very welcoming and efficient and throughout my stay the front desk staff were excellent, being friendly and helpful with great suggestions for the area. They offer a lesson in customer care that would be the envy of many of the highest category hotels I’ve stayed in.
My allocated room was spacious, comfortable and clean with a large, well equipped bathroom. Free Wi-Fi was available throughout the hotel and the room had a large flat screen TV (although it was not really used during my stay). There is a small seating area outside each room which faces onto the pool which is a nice, individual touch.
The restaurant on the top floor has a great ambiance and on the one time I ate there (apart from breakfasts) the food was delicious. The buffet breakfasts are good quality and you can order hot food such as omelets. Breakfast is available early which is definitely needed given the ‘heat avoiding’ early starts. There is an Apple Mac on the top floor area for quests use and I did regularly enjoy a glass of wine as a nightcap over an online catch up of the news.
The hotel is not in centre of Siem Reap but that actually makes it very peaceful, away from the traffic and ‘hustle and bustle’ of the town and closer to the temples. For nights out in Siem Reap it’s only a 10 minute Tuk Tuk drive and that’s really far more fun anyway. Much has been mentioned about the use of Tuk Tuk drivers arranged as part of your stay and I certainly agree with all the praise that’s been lavished in other reviews. My Tuk Tuk driver (Mr Ha) was simply one of the most accommodating, helpful and friendly people I’ve come across. I certainly put him through an endurance test of driving as I tried to cram in as much as possible; cris-crossing the dirt roads across the many wonderful ancient sights, a sun-rise visit to Angkor Wat, a visit to Floating village at the Tonle Sap Great Lake lake and every night out in Siem Reap. Despite this ‘Olympian’ sightseeing agenda, Mr Ha was always astonishingly cheerful, never complained, gave me some great sight-seeing tips and always was at hand with a nice cold bottle of water when I returned from a site. Watching the world go by and the many sights and sounds around the roads is really part of the experience. Mr Ha certainly enhanced my whole experience of Cambodia and, as I was on my own, it was good to have some company in my travels.
I did try a massage on one of the evening at the hotel and it was extremely beneficial after a long tiring day clambering over the stones and climbing the many temple steps. I did not swim in the pool but it looked very inviting. I’ll save this to next time.
Siddharta is a really fabulous small boutique hotel where personal, friendly, helpful service is clearly at a premium. Being slightly out of Siem Reap makes it more relaxing and quieter and another excuse to use your very own personal Tuk Tuk service which enhances the whole experience. The Rooms and facilities are very good and the massages incredible for the cost. I would love to return again with my family and certainly highly recommend this hotel to others.
