I can see why some guests would consider this hotel good value. But for me there were problems with 1. the upkeep of the hotel and 2. dishonesty by hotel staff.
The alley which leads to the hotel is unkempt and filled with trash. On entering the hotel, the lobby doesn't seem too bad at first sight, though the area behind the check in desk looks extremely shabby and needs painting. Terrible first impression.
Room was adequate, though the bathroom trash bin had not been emptied of trash from the previous occupant. I noticed the windows had been left unlocked, not a good idea with easy access to any intruder from the balcony outside the room. Good thing I checked.
Wifi is ok though occasionally slow.
I decided to move to this hotel because it has a pool, and in fact the pool is its best feature, large and quite clean. However, the area around the pool is direly in need of attention. The large day beds are mildewed and full of holes so that the sponge mattress can be seen under the vinyl coverings. Very unsightly and unhygienic. The shower by the pool is rusty and unsightly.
Towels are clean but hard and scratchy, haven't they heard of fabric softener? Very unpleasant against the skin.
Breakfast is French bread with jam or eggs, plus coffee and tea. No cereals offered, or Asian breakfast for non-western guests. In addition the dining area is not kept as clean as it should be. Coffee and tea are set up on two crappy old tables and the overall effect is half-assed and depressing. I came down to breakfast at 9 AM and all tables were littered with crumbs, jam etc and had not been cleaned after previous diners had finished. 90 % of the tables were empty, but I had to ask the attendant to clean a table for me.
For the price -27 dollars per night - perhaps this standard was not surprising. But the most disappointing aspect of my stay was what occurred after I had left my wallet on a table on a common balcony area. Two very nice French guests had turned my wallet in to the front desk. They told me exactly how much cash it had contained. but when I retrieved my wallet - 5 minutes later - all the cash was missing. Naturally I was happy and grateful to receive my wallet, but it was difficult not to conclude - though impossible to prove - that the cash had been removed by staff members...and I see from Trip aadvisor postings other guests have had similar problems.
I have a great deal of sympathy for Cambodian people struggling to make a living on low pay. However, there should also be a bond of trust between hotel guests and staff members. Most travelers take this for granted. But this bond of trust was, I felt, broken by staff members. I would gladly have given a reward for my wallet, if it had still contained any cash.
The sad thing is that most of the above deficiencies could be fixed with just a little bit of willingness and hard work. I'm amazed there seems no interest on the part of either management or staff to do so. Service was indifferent and English ability of staff was among the worst I have encountered in Cambodia, and, yes I recognize this is a developing country. However, all in all this hotel is very below par for its price and needs refurbishing immediately.
For less money I stayed at a much friendlier, cleaner and better run hotel on the other side of the river, though without a pool.
I will definitely not stay at this hotel again and would advise fellow travelers to steer clear.
