We had a 10 night stay in Siem Reap and as usual picked our hotel based on previous Tripadviser reviews, and to a large part were not disappointed with The Pavillon Orient. We preferred the out of town location and with Seth our cheerful Tuk Tuk driver always available the "isolation" was never an issue. However we opted for a car with guide for our Temple tours, the car providing a welcome air conditioned refuge between stops and I would strongly recommend it . The hotel staff lived up to their excellent reputation and, without exception, were almost unbelievably cheerful regardless of the time of day or night. Breakfasts were on hand till just before lunch time and were quite acceptable with a range of cooked options together with fresh fruit and cakes. Our room was very pleasant and overlooked the pool through lush tropical plants, it also had a balcony with a small table and a couple of chairs, ideal for a couple of sundowners before Seth picked us up for our nightly trip into town for dinner. On arrival we had a complimentary bottle of wine left for us and the Hotel made a cake for my birthday...all very nice touches. My wife and I had several massages in the hotel spa which varied in quality from good to excellent (depending on which masseuse did it). The pool was a good size with plenty of sun beds and the garden surroundings all worked together to make it a very relaxing place to rest after the hustle and bustle of the Temples.....well at least it would have been if it were not for a neighbour of the hotel blasting out "music" over a very loud speaker system. I must assume we were just unlucky due to only one other mention of this issue in the other reviews, but believe me the noise made it impossible to sit round the pool or on your balcony and even in your room the TV would have to be on quite loud to drown it out. I enquired at reception and was told it was a funeral and would stop in a couple of days! The neighbour would start his ritual at around 4.30am with a "tap" "tap" "tap" on the microphone and in english say "testing... testing...testing" ....the prelude to the start of a full day of monotonous religious chanting/wailing. Admittedly the volume started somewhat lower to begin with but gradually increased as the day wore on. Earlier in the week Cambodian pop music blasted out from the same source, so 3 days out of our 10 day stay it was impossible to enjoy the "out of town" peace and quiet we had so looked forward to.
However even taking into account the "neighbour from hell" the hotel and its staff combine to make it a highly recommended and enjoyable place to stay........but take some ear plugs just in case!
