“Good value but average quality”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 13, 2012

Stayed here for four nights in November 2012. It was the cheapest place we stayed in our month in Bolivia at 80 Bolivianos a night for a matrimonial room. We had a great view of the lake, which made the three flights of stairs worthwhile. The room itself was a bit shabby with peeling paint and a bathroom door that wouldn't stay shut. We got hot water in the shower if we played around with the taps enough, but never from the wash basin tap.

The toilet flush was rubbish and just didn't do its job. In the end we resorted to pouring three bottles of tap water down there simultaneously to flush it. Also, I know it's a hostel, not a hotel, but it would be nice if they could pop in and empty your bin if you're staying for multiple nights.

The TV had a good range of channels and the wifi worked well in the downstairs area. It's in a handy location for the main square. A bit of an uphill trek from the lakefront. The staff are quite friendly but do try to sell you bus and boat tickets quite a lot. The roof terrace has great views and is a nice place to hang out even though they don't seem to have made much effort with it.

It was fairly quiet most nights while we were there, although the Saturday night was quite noisy.

Hostel Sonia is across from Hostel Emperador, Just out of the main part of town behind the cathedral They have private rooms, hot water, clean sheets and a shared kitchen and common room. But don't eat the food,... better go to a restaurant.

Fairly decent option, away from the centre of town and the circus that goes with that. The rooms ok, kitchen, communal area etc etc. The people there were quite friendly too and helpful, and the rooms had tv.

After our trip to Isla del Sol we stayed here one night. We got a very spacious and clean room with large windows (lakeview!!) and a good and clean bathroom. They have a fast laundry service and serve breakfast with eggs, if you want. It would be a nice place if the staff was a little bit more friendly...

Room Tip: Ask for a room with lakeview!

For the duration of our stay it seemed that people flock to this place. . . .due to Lonely Planet rating. Sonia has clicked onto this. Lonely Planet states 25bs per person. Sonia states 40bs per person. I brought her down to 30bs for a room, twin beds and no bathroom. (she wanted to know why we didn´t want a double bed. Any of her business?!) The guy working there is SO ignorant. Beware of what you get offered too, she´s mad to sell sell sell. Toilet paper (2bs) breakfast (10bs) From speaking to her you´d swear it´s being offered!! The rooms werenice and when the cable tv worked it was a nice bonus. All in all, don´t bother trekking out of your way to get here. Find another budget option in the town, loads on offer.

Hostel Sonia was bizarre. While Sonia herself was nice (apart from an incident when we accidentally walked into HER kitchen) I could not agree more that the caretaker is a rude and stupid person. We were told off for eating the dinner that we'd cooked in their advertised kitchen (which was filthy) because he was worried he might have to sweep thr floor, as well as for sitting at different tables. We weren't allowed into the living area or kitchen for 4 hours due to cleaning so we couldnt sit anywhere or cook our lunch. The wifi was turned off without explanation by the caretaker at 10pm despite a room full of users. He was overall supremely unhelpful and unwelcoming. The breakfast was good. Hostel Sonia was cheap but don't expect much.

The things you read about this Hostel are a thing of the past. The place smells bad. Something died in here recently! We called Sonia personally on a thursday for a reservation for the next day. She personally assured us we would have a room. When we showed up the next day, she admitted she willingly overbooks her hostel due to Good Friday and Semana Santa, We got to sleep on the roof, nice view though. Still, all our belongings were exposed to the whole town, since anyone can just walk in and walk out. We retrieved our bags from the “secured storage” without anyone noticing. What really hit me was the Bolivian familie that had to spend the night in the seats in the kitchen because Sonio "forgot" their reservation. If they would have bothered they would have found four empty matrasses on the top floor, could have been enough for the little kids to get some rest. The caretaker of this hostel is just a rude idiot.
Needless to say we left this dump of a hostal the next day to find better lodging. Don’t go here!

Room Tip: Any other hostel than this!
